Glock 19

AR-15 16” lightweight carbine

That is all anyone ever needs imho
 Quoting: Malu nli

If you have no firearms, your first should be an AR15.

5.56 ammunition will more common in SHTF scenario.

Next firearm should be any quality semiauto 9mm pistol - 9mm is far more common than other pistol rounds.

Have 200-500 rounds for each.

The list of reasons is a mile long but they all end up at the same place. This is the perfect all around combination for most people for most situations Lightweight, high capacity, lethal, inexpensive, RELIABLE, controllable, common parts everywhere, inexpensive mags, most common weapons in the USA

If anything buy multiple sets of this combo

The virus panic has finally gotten to me and given the coming opiod crisis, the one where there are no opioids, it seems prudent to be able to protect myself and my children.

The test is no problem, training, no problem..but what kind of weapon?

Re: This is it GLP. Going to buy my first firearm.
I assume your primary concern is security inside your home. In that case there is no real choice--a pump action shotgun that can give 5 shells if need be. The shotgun is the hands down winner because you don't have to worry about killing your own kids in another room or a neighbor 5 houses away--which could easily occur with a larger handgun or a rifle.

Outside the home, as mentioned before, a 38 is a very good choice. It is smaller and lighter--easier to hide, recover, and handle.

A nice advantage of the 38 revolver over some semi auto handguns is that not only is it cheaper but if you do have to wax someone in public you don't have to waste time picking up round casings--just get outa dodge-if there is further danger :).

Buy a few hundred rounds--practice makes perfect.

I like the tough granny with braids and a shotgun look but i’m afraid it’s too big and someone will just grab it right out of my hands! Need something stealthy-ish just for that moment I hope will never happen.

12 gauge isn't too big. I'm like 100 pounds and I can handle a 12 gauge. You don't need to worry about anyone getting close enough to grab it. You don't let them, fire that baby when they cross that door threshold

Glock 17 9mm with few 33 round magazines. The gun will go bang every time unlike a lot of other semi - autos. I got 4 in bedrooms, kitchen and living room all with 33 round magazines.

Re: This is it GLP. Going to buy my first firearm.
A revolver is generally regarded as "safest" for the new shooter or never shooter.

You can swing the chamber out and there's no way it will fire. You can look at the chambers to see if it's loaded. The double-action trigger pull is usually pretty heavy, so not much chance of accidental discharge.

A .38 special snubnose is a pro weapon. Lightweight 38s have more recoil and are difficult to control.

A .22LR semi-auto pistol is pretty easy to handle, pretty easy to learn to shoot with accuracy, and has almost no recoil. Not the greatest in stopping power, but you can aim for the eyes... Load it with Stingers or other super velocity loads. A Ruger MKII or MKIII is a very reliable and easy to operate .22 pistol. Holds 10 shots. You buy a spare magazine and keep it will the gun, and you have 20rds ready to go... A 4" barrel is pretty concealable. The Browning Buckmark is another very fine choice for a .22 Stainless steel if you can find one.

A 20ga shotgun is also a decent choice for in-home defense. Not much recoil from a semi-auto, the gas operation reduces the recoil and automatically reloads the gun. A 25" or 20" barreled gun, like a "deer hunters special" will have sights. Have the plug removed so you have full 5rd capacity rather than 2 in chamber that the law requires for hunting. Buy 2-3/4" shells, not 3"magnum. Buy #4 or #2 waterfowl shells, maybe some #4 buckshot and a few slugs. #6 & #7-1/2 for killing birds or rabbits.

A Ruger 10/22 semi-auto carbine in .22LR is also worth considering. Very reliable and you can get 25rd magazines from Ruger. 25 shots is a lot of firepower. Again, aim for the eyes...

Need to try out what you buy first, if you can. Semi-auto shotgun will be spendy, but very versatile.

A Glock 9mm might also be a good choice, but easier to learn to shoot a handgund with a .22... Unless your local range can provide a lesson or two.

I would call your local gun ranges and ask about getting a lesson and being able to rent the guns you are considering. Ask them to waive the rental fee if you buy a gun.

Best deals on used guns at gunshops and pawnshops. Offer 40% less, and pay in cash at the pawnshop. Ask for 10% off at the gunshop on a used piece. Never know...

Buy several boxes of each type of ammunition. Can probably still get a carton of Stingers, which is 10 boxes of 50rds.

Probably no waiting period on a shotgun or rifle. Don't buy the gun unless the dealer has ammunition for it.

Teach the kids about safe gun-handling, better yet, after you learn from your lessons, teach them by taking them to the range.

Probably want a holster so your handgun is always with you. Stainless Steel is better for when you shower or bathe.

A handgun and a shotgun or carbine is a good combination for self-defense in the home. If you live in the country or suburbs, maybe an AR-15 or Ruger Mini-14 instead of the shotgun.

First gun, no experience clearing jams, no experience in proper stance, no experience in recoil mitigation?

Then a 12 gauge tatical or home defense model not a hunting model. Must have a stock none of that Hollywood pistol grip only shit.

Pistols are useless with out training with them. The barrel will pull left or right with bad form and you will certainly jerk the trigger rather than squeeze it. A simple movement of 1/8 inch at the front sight means 4-5 feet off target at 10 yards.

Rifles are much easier but being new to them in a bad situation will have you hitting people you don’t intend to.

My favorite is my .32 Beretta tomcat. Small enough to slip in the pocket or purse and fun as hell to shoot. The .38 is good too but is bigger and bulkier to carry around. People tell me I should carry the .38 because it has more "stopping power" also it has a laser sight that would presumably be a deterrent itself. But, I figure the .32 in my pocket is better than the .38 I left in the glove box because it is too big. I don't shoot the good stuff through it very often at $1 a bullet, but when I have the holes it makes look plenty big enough to me.

You can't stay home all the time. Need to leave the safety of your home to buy food or go to the doctor for example. Don't want to be walking around with a shotgun or ar drawing attention or causing alarm. Need a weapon that can be hidden ie a handgun. Choose a common caliber. .380 acp, 38 spl., 9mm, even 22LR works if you are recoil adverse. Some gun is better than no gun.

Read the book by Tom Givens: Fighting Smarter

Having said all that I'd get a Glock G43. It's reliable, easy to shoot, concealable and chambered in 9mm, a serious self defense caliber.

I bought my first weapon from a sales guy who was a former cop at a gun shop. Here's what he said.

Get a shotgun for home defense because...

* Don't need to be a crack shot, just point and shoot

* Variety of ammo, bird shot, various sizes of buck shot and slugs makes a shotgun more versatile than any other weapon

* The ominous sound of racking a shotgun offers a warning that others weapons don't offer

* If you miss (assuming you did not shoot a slug) it won't go through several walls and kill an innocent next door

Get a shock absorbing stock with a pistol grip and you will be set for anything!

Make sure to get a variety of shot shells

Aren't you too late already?

Regardless, make sure you have a way of locking that thing away from your kids and don't keep it lying around loaded with one in the chamber.

I'd go for a Colt 1911 ACP or a Browning HP given its price, sturdiness, caliber and reliability. If you want something dead-simple to use and clean, go with a revolver, like a Taurus. A shotgun is always nice ...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78212206

Too late? I think it’s a 3 hour wait near me at the moment and a waiting period, who knows. I’m going to try and will report back.
 Quoting: Nutty Broad

Whatever you do, DO NOT GET A 1911. They require a lot more skill and are NOT good for a beginner.
Five things have to happen to get a 1911 to fire:
*) Round in chamber
*) Grip Safety - OFF
*) Thumb Safety - OFF
*) Hammer back
*) Trigger press

A Glock only requires TWO THINGS to fire
*) Round in chamber
*) Trigger Press.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73065160

I agree, If I were a chick getting a first pistol I would get a decocker or a striker fired gun.

OP, just get a glock 17 and be done with it. Too many choices, too little time.

Go buy a pump action shotgun.

1. Because they are much less expensive than a good handgun or AR-15.
2. They are very versatile because you can pick different size shot depending on the circumstances. For example if you are worried about shooting through walls and hitting your kids then go for a large bird shot, or if you are worried about jackbooted thugs with body armor then go for a big ass slug.
3. And lastly the design is very simple so much less can go wrong.
4. Oh and nothing gets more respect than the sound of a round being chambered in a shotgun.

Now for a suggestion I would say go with the Remington 870.
