Flour Shortage in northern New England?

This afternoon, my 73-year old aunt called me from northern Vermont to ask about flour shortages in my area (Concord, New Hampshire). She and my uncle had just made their way back home after being on the road in their RV for several months.

There were NO bags of flour available in their area grocery stores. None in St. Albans, Johnsonville, Enosburg... nothing. And these are all 30+ minute drives from their home.

Finding this odd, as King Arthur Flour is based in VT, I went to their website, thinking I could order some flour to send to her home- NOPE! All the flours are "temporarily unavailable" for order at the King Arthur website. And I mean, even the rye, whole wheat, specialty & etc. flours!

So I went out to our grocery store intending to buy a 10lb bag to send to her, and there were none left- only 5lb bags and a limit of 1 per person, per visit. Hmm. And NO store-brand flour, either. We did get 2 5lb bags to send to her (usps shipping rates are nuts) because she bakes a lot.

So hey- get yer all-purpose and bread flour now, guys. If King Arthur Flour is out (they typically buy the whole trainload) then some ting wong.
