You've maybe heard of Hugleculture?..Well this is even better because it holds moisture and the chipmunks won't set up shop. I'm growing a large amount of potatoes in very rocky ground at 9000 ft in Colorado.

Here's how it works. Choose the spot for your bed and dig EVERYTHING out 2-3 feet deep and get rid of it except black dirt if you find it. Replace everything with either straw or wood chips. Place a thin layer of soil on the top. Plant your potatoes and keep adding more organic material as they grow.

Pretty soon you'll have a massive amount of potatoes and it's better than pots. This works for carrots, beets and other long tap root plants. Reverse Hugleculture is the way to go. Raised beds are next best but these hold your water better. Just throw the potatoes in don't even worry about cutting up unless you're stretching your harvest. Potatoes are easy and if everyone grew them we would make it through this collapse.
