The eco-rebels of the Himalayas

An Indian state in the Himalayas has completely transformed agriculture and switched to organic farming. Sikkim has become a model for the rest of the world, because its farmers only cultivate their fields and plantations in a sustainable way.

In 2020, the Prime Minister of Sikkim launched the so called ”Organic Mission”, developing the state into a model of sustainable farming. To protect its own organic farmers and ban on conventionally produced fruit and vegetables. This means that authorities have the power to bury or destroy vegetables and fruit contaminated with pesticides and agrochemical giants such as Bayer and BASF are not welcome in Sikkim.

CAN ORGANIC FEED THE WORLD?

With the global population set to hit 9.1 billion by 20501, it’s true that in the future we’ll need to grow more food than ever. But there’s a common misconception that organic isn’t up to the task. This week, we’ll take a look at:

•why the question of yields may be the wrong question

•why so much of the current research on organic yields is wrong;

•why more pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, no matter how precisely applied, aren’t the answer.
...

Challenges to Current Research

Studies claiming that organic yields are unequivocally less are generally short-term, meaning they collect data over just a couple years. There is a serious dearth of long-term research on the differences between organic and conventional. Only long-term research accurately reflects changes in soil health, weather patterns and pest and disease cycles, giving a fuller picture of reality.

Our Farming Systems Trial, started in 1981, is the longest-running side-by-side trial of organic and conventional in North America. Our data shows:

1. Organic yields are competitive with conventional yields after a 5-year transition period

2. Organic systems produce yields up to 40% higher in drought

3. Organic methods leach no toxic chemicals into waterways

4. Organic uses 45% less energy

5. Organic releases 40% fewer greenhouse emissions

6. Organic earns 3-6x higher profits for farmers

The Farming Systems Trial is, however, limited. Our climate in Pennsylvania isn’t reflective of growing conditions the world over. That’s why we’re expanding our research and replicating the trial in new regions.

Hi! "organic" is another hipster scam. In fact most organic products out there contain more quimicals than normal food. The only way to KNOW what you eat is to plant yourself.

Hi!

Well, that’s your opinion and I respect that.

Personally, I can’t eat the skin of conventionally produced fruits cuz my throat gets swollen. And organic fruits are just fine.

Of course growing your own is best, but when you live in an apt. it's not doable.

There are organic items that I cannot go back to the mainstream of now, because the taste of them is terrible compared to organic....eggs, butter, pasta....and now applesauce.

I bought some organic applesauce - what I normally buy, if I don't make it myself - with my preps for this debacle were in, and than a few days later saw a jar of Tree Top applesauce. I figured since I didn't know how long it was going to be like this, I went ahead and got it. There was so little applesauce left.

Well, yesterday morning I opened it up, and the smell that came up out of that jar made me turn my nose up....and yet, I still tasted some. It tasted nasty, not bad, like rotten, just nasty. I threw it away.

Organic food may not be perfect food, but it's a hella a lot better than the mainstream kwap.

well, soon after the economic collapse due to the coronacrisis, there will be no more wars; only green pasture to harvest and cows to milk. There's your Paradise.

The smell of regular chicken is horrid compare to the smell of organic chicken. Before preparing food I always boil my meats for a minute and then I throw that water. Oh, my... the smell of the water of the regular chicken is disgusting.
