"One thing's for sure - the "burnout" rate of people who went through those programs is exceptionally high."

This rings especially true for me... I've never been able to translate my intelligence into real world financial gain or success. I have a PhD, which came easy but I hated completing, but have always had trouble dealing with finances/jobs/relationships. I can dazzle others with my intelligence/knowledge when I want to but then usually end up completely withdrawing and shutting down.

I think it's because I have issues rationalizing what is in my mind and what I've experienced with conventional "reality" and society. So many things seem futile and meaningless and I can't bear to deal with it and have trouble relating to people who are comfortable with this facade. I feel I have to constantly dumb myself down or participate in a lie in order to fit in.

This led to pretty severe alcoholism during my mid 20s- early 30s, but I completely ended that a few years ago when my son was born.

Anyhow, thanks for the support and advice.

I'm like you. An INTP personality. I love solving the problem, but once it's solved, I have no interest whatsoever in applying the solution to the real world to produce a real tangible result. I just immediately look for another problem to solve. So I never gain from anything I do.

Glad you found this topic. All things for a reason - your story is almost word-for-word the same for all of us. The programs trained us to think differently and then spit us out into a world that didn't follow the same logic. Drug/alcohol abuse and running away from your "potential" are very common themes for most of us.

Yikes i do remember some of that but some was just putting on headphones and listening in channels to see if each ear was hearing correctly. But yeah the bus thing and weird flash cards and images...

Of course getting spanked by that bitch Principal when i was like 6 was probably more scarring...

Does anyone who was a kid in the late 70's or early 80's recall being pulled out of class and taken to a large bus or van and having visual, hearing, smell, and possibly taste tests performed on them? As well as some kind of card matching tests and asked to answer a series of increasingly difficult questions . I have vague memory of being asked to perform some kind testing of what now seems like some kind psychological testing. I recall the person performing the tests was not a member of the school faculty. They would take you to a large black bus or tractor trailer that had a large generator and air conditioning in it. I remember it being really cold in there and smelling very sterile.

No. Born late 80’s.
I remember in elementary school I’d be taken out of class to play around with toys that encouraged patterns; think like blocks, pendulums, bubbles, counters etc.

I don’t recall anything too weird happening.

I became disillusioned early. Before I even left school. I think disillusionment is a good thing. You can never really know the truth until you realize all you've been told is bullshit. Then you can see clearly, without the weight of all that bullshit clouding your judgement.

On of two things happens to a disillusioned person. You either throw your arms up and say fuck it all I'm done with this shit, or you dig even deeper. Most do the former, the truly gifted the latter.

As a kid who walked to the dentist in the local health center from school I was invited to test a new type of pain relief.

This stuff was some type of LSD or something, it hurt but i could not be bothered to do much about it.

Gifted as some would call it i am but am not aware of TPTB knowing about it but i have lost most of it by now but was dynamite as a child.

every once in a while, once a month or so, they'd take the "GT" kids out of class and put us in a classroom/or usually an office back in the depths of the campus and do a few tests, i remember the one with the headphones that would emit a certain tone, and then you'd have to identify which tone it was that was the "control" tone..

some written tests that involved simple patterns and mechanical type questions..

then you went back to regular school and didnt hear anything else about it until next time they did it.

That's insane. I remember this! I have a horrible memory but can still remember the woman's face who administered the test.

Also remember wearing headphones and looking at geometric patterns. Must have been around 2nd grade or so.

I was often isolated from all the other students at times. I have odd flashbacks and nightmares. I vaguely recall men and women in white lab coats. Very weird and so confusing. There are some occations where I was abused while at school by various teachers and staff.

We had it here in Australia around the same time. They would strip you down to your underwear and do the tests on you. From memory it was pretty traumatic and the teacher would let you play after the experience to let the kids chill out for the rest of the day.

I remember a lot of geometry patterns on some test and ALL the male students lining up for shots in the right upper arm/tricep area for German Measles I believe.
The rushed vaccine was because a consequence of catching GM was sterility in those that contracted the disease. Ironically I have never had kids and several people I knew from that ere didn't either. This put most of us coming of legal/drinking age in the 80's and those years are frequently blamed for the reason. It was never noted demographically because this was pre-Hispanic time period and they were counted as white, and they were pouring over the border back then too.

Re: Does anyone who was a kid in the late 70's early 80's recall having strange tests performed on them at school?
I had the hearing tests probably in about grade three, around 1978 maybe. It wasn't until the 90's they understood ADHD, hyperactivity and all those other attention disorders. I know I had one as a young child that impacted my ability to concentrate. It was of course never diagnosed. But looking back now, yeah, I realize I had one. For me it came and went. I only had it certain days, certain times. Not all the time.

I suspect, at least in my case, they thought my hearing was bad, that's why the teacher could call my name and it was as if I never heard her. I didn't hear her because I was off in ADD space at the time. Not knowing what was the true cause of it, that was their best guess.

I'm sure lots of us got hearing tests for that reason.

Re: Does anyone who was a kid in the late 70's early 80's recall having strange tests performed on them at school?
I remember this very distinctively. In my school district everyone else would do reading and myself and 4 others would go down the stairs and go to a small room with a table of 6 chairs and do tests.

This was all of third grade and in 4th and 5th grade I went to a different school across town. 200 students I think where we had a "guest teacher" every Wednesday and had to stay a whole day whereas the rest of the district had half days.

We also had a once a month meeting with a guy in a green sweater that for me gave a rubix cube to solve or did some tests involving pictures.

I was placed in the program. It was the late 60’s and I hated being called from class . There were a few adults that came into the school and I clearly remember them being dressed much nicer than the teachers.

I stayed in the program a few months, then told my parents I no longer wanted to be in the group. It was a once a week or maybe once a month program.

They had odd equipment, I remember one slotted projector that would flash one sentence at a time. It taught you how to speed read. To this day I can read books fast. It’s easy for me to read and comprehend a 500 page book in a few hours.

Probably would have been better if I had stayed in the program, but then again I remember I did not like the adults. 55 years later I still remember not trusting them

Finally someone speaks part of the truth.....

I was one of these children! They use phycometric testing methods, Rubin’s Vase etc. etc. Then the hypnotised me, which is what they most likely did to you, me, and others. Once hypnotised what we’re we given? and why? The year, 1976, my 6? the country, the UK, the County, Essex, I’ve been using the time to write a book about the experiences from then until now, in a fiction sort of way, for those that understand what I’m about to say, I say this, the fog is intentional, the physical reactions you have, including sickness etc. when you try to talk about it, write about it, explain it, is part of the programming, and trust me, you have been programmed, most would have been acTivaTed in 2017 for knowing what you know today, and you know a lot....

The information you retain in the unconscious and subconscious will come forward, but a clue is, what colour woke you up, if you will?!

I will write more under a separate thread at some stage but “we are the Q and the A”.

I am (now one) of the Q and the A.

Yes! Fucking yes yes yes!!!!!!
I was in the 80s and 90s but U.K.

They dragged me out of primary school throughout. I was taken into a room with at least 5 doctors. I never understood it. I was asked all sorts of weird questions, had to look at blobs on paper and tell them what I saw. They would ask about things I could see or feel and how I saw things compared to others. I was a psychic child and I used to trance out allot at home or school. I was telling adults that I couldn’t here them whilst in a trance as part of me was out my body in another realm. My mum tried to stop me talking about it and my abilities. That’s why they pulled me out of lessons. Going into high school first years was the same but my trancing had stopped by second year and so did the pulling out of lessons. By my third year I was pulled out all lessons permenantly and giving fun classes.

I have challenged my mum in adult life as memories of it all come back even my abilities. She couldn’t deny it and said she was sorry she tried all she could to block my abilities and it worked for so long as they stopped probing me.

I still remember the trances and where I went out my body. Also remember all the times they pulled me out of school to do tests in me

i just did a quick google for gifted and talented program, it's still around and documented in Texas, where i was a student in the early 90's....

i ran across the the requirements to be considered for the "gifted and talented," program and it said children must score in the 98th and 99th percentile for the "gifted and talented" program test. I remember my parents being really proud when i was chosen, i remember them talking about how i'd scored in the 98th percentile, mom was very proud.

my school tested a new needle-less gun for vaccines...It hurt 10 times more then a needle...but the messed up thing...the vaccine was for the Chickenpox..I had them the year before.

then later because of a paperwork mistake in college I had to get the Chickenpox vaccine.
I got it twice AFTER I had the chickenpox.

Thanks for the info... funny how a lot of us who went through this are now here on GLP, years later.

This site has something strange about it and I'm not sure how I was drawn here but, alas, here I am, for the last 10 years, lurking.

I've gone down a lot of rabbit holes in in my life, too far down a few times so I have to be careful.

Not sure what those words posted above are all about but they did trigger some type of memory in me. Especially "baloo=bear" and "pivey=chipmunk". Geez... have to be careful here. Usually not good for my family/adult life when I start diving into this stuff.

Not saying I'm anything special but, man, there have been some strange things throughout my years and some answers would be nice.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78635541

This rabbit hole gets pretty deep, and it all seems pretty meaningless now. That's why I finally walked away from it. It's worth going through that big thread for a little closure but it WILL trigger all sorts of stuff that might be better left in the past. There's also surprisingly few answers about the bigger picture. Most likely, the G&T programs of the 70's-early 90's were influenced equally by the human potential movement, eugenics, and intelligence agency funding. There may have been a more sinister motive but there's no "smoking gun" document out there than explains it. One thing's for sure - the "burnout" rate of people who went through those programs is exceptionally high.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75458309

when this recent shit started a few weeks ago i half wondered if This " was it".. apparently not.. the burnout is real a low grade continual state of ennui.

yeah, they called it "GT" gifted and talented.

Yeah, that's what I remember it being called. I was in that group, though I was from a military family and moved / went to a different school almost every year or so...

One school in particular (in 6th grade) allowed me to skip two full days per week of science class and work on computer programming instead (with a handful of 8th graders.) That was after taking some Mensa tests, however...

School was much different back then...

Yeah. Scotland 1973.
Days after the very tests you mention i got a vaccination.

I was healthy happy and one of the best runners in my year.
I could run for hours.
About two weeks later whilst staying with my Aunt for a few days as my mother was getting small medical operation .Went to bed as normal and half hour later i was struggling to breathe. Really struggling . I freaked the fuck out.

It was my first ever Asthma Attack. Obviously i never even knew what that was.

Inhalers and Meds for the rest of my life.
Months after that, my teeth started to rot from the inside out. I had good teeth too. Within 2 years all gone. All of them. No dental problems in the family until then.

here's the thing, my young brother went through the exact same ordeal at school after his tests and vaccine.
His nose bled every other day for about 2 years. He lost ALL his teeth within 1 year and he wet the bed for about 3 years, having never ever suffered any of these conditions before those tests and Injections.

Bastards.

Re: Were You Part Of The "Mentally Gifted Minds" Program In California Scools back in the 70's?
Listen, I found out what’s going on. You can too. Start doing your genealogy as far back as you can. At one point you will be totally blown away at the person you discover is your ancestor, and all your questions will be answered. You will know for sure why they were doing the culling and the investigating.

My dad's side had nothing notable. My mother's side tracked back to the Buck family of Bucks County PA who also fought in the Revolutionary War. I couldn't trace it any further than that.
