Each year you’ll inevitably run out of garden space and have a certain amount of seeds left over after planting. Don’t throw them out just yet! Depending on the type of seed and its quality, you may be able to store them and use them next year or the year after. In fact, some seeds, if properly stored, can be viable even after ten years. Some varieties of tomato seeds have even been known to germinate after as long as 16 years!

TIPS FOR STORING SEEDS
Storing unused vegetable or flower seeds does require some care. To remain viable, seeds must not be exposed to any moisture or extreme temperature fluctuations. They should be kept in a cool dry place. Some people store them in sealed plastic bags, while others keep them in glass jars in the refrigerator. Whatever works best for you is fine, but the important thing is that they not be exposed to moisture. Wetness can quickly cause mold to grow, killing the seeds.

TESTING SEEDS
Let’s say you have some seeds that are a couple of years old. At this point, you really can’t be certain if they are going to germinate, even if they’ve been stored under optimum conditions in a dry, cool place.

In this situation, you can test the seeds a few weeks before planting time by taking several seeds, placing them on a moist paper towel, covering it with plastic and placing it in a warm spot. Check back in a week or so and if you have sprouts you’ll know the seeds are viable.

if you dont freeze them,sometimes bugs will eat them in the jar.
so i freeze mine then store them afterwards.
i had a half bag of feed corn,three years old in my house i was saving.just pulled it out 3 days ago and every corn piece was hollowed out by boll weevles,just corn shells and corn powder.a thousand weevils.

For the price of a couple packets, you can get a pound of seeds. Store them in the freezer and they will last decades. Or share with your neighborhood.

We are getting 80% of orders out in 10 business days or less, and we are acutely aware of every single order that is over that time frame. Many of those very late orders are held up by a shortage in mostly packaging materials. Our bulk seed inventory continues to be very strong overall.

Everwilde Farms still have some veggie and melon seeds left that you can purchase online. A lot of the seeds are selling out, but figured I'd share as I just ordered a few packages for us.

They're out of a LOT of individual seed varieties!

I was able to get a large order in for my garden before they sold out on many items. Also, luckily have many packages from a family member from them as well. I will be saving many seeds from harvest this year!

I really need to learn how to preserve them for the following season. My grandfather did this as he grew up on a farm and he had the most gorgeous gardens during WWII- he grew so much, he was able to help other families eat during that time. How I wish he was here today to show me what he did.

I bought some seeds locally early this spring and then placed an online order for mostly fall seeds on March 21st. I just got the shipping notification on April 3rd.

Hopefully more people are planting a garden and were able to secure seeds. My dad hasn't planted a garden in a couple of years, but he put in some raised beds a couple of weeks ago. Most can see the writing on the wall by now.

Just germinated the 7 best varieties of tomato out of the 120+ I tried in the last 10 years. Gonna upsize the pots today as the soil here still is under 55 degrees F. Went back 2-4 years with most varieties to make sure they aren't cross-bred (they keep well in the freezer).

Tell! What are the 7 best varieties and why?

Best varieties of tomatoes for the mid-south I've found include: Bear Claw, Virginia Sweets, Green Giant, acclimated Cherokee Purple, Sunburst Cherry and Yellow Cherry, and Matt's Wild Cherry. Most of these even set above 90 degrees F.

Flavor, productivity, and ability to last all summer into fall, and set in very hot temperatures are my main criteria.

There are ways to start almost instant beds too.
