i barely missed this, i was released in february, i can't imagine how crazy it is in TDCJ (texas prison) right about now, by the grace of God things lined up just right for me to get out right before this hit... (did 3 years on a 15) non violent crime. (did exactly what i was supposed to in order to get out so early, went to college, had ZERO cases, participated in a 6 month drug rehabilitation program)

stay clean and stay out of that place.

thoughts on the video: i dont know that guy doesn't really look that sick and i think they would have quarantined him to another part of the prison if he was really that sick (the guy laying down)

the prison looks legit though, thats a real unit, that might actually be "Le Blanc" in Beaumont, TX... it looks like it from the vid shot out the window, i was across the street from there if it is (in Larry Gist unit) in Beaumont for the last 6 months of my tour (Gist is a rehab unit)

hell no, but they are widely available on some units, very expensive though, about a grand.

they are then "rented" out, sometimes 5-10 dollars/hour, sometimes higher, depending on availability.

they are smuggled in by the officers, usually a "burner" phone preloaded with a month of service at first, and then you communicate with people on the outside to reload them.

Obviously not... They smuggle it in all the time though. He doesn't care about getting caught with it right now cause he knows hes most likely going to die.

in Texas a large percentage of the officers run a "side business." whether it be phones, or drugs, or other things they can smuggle in...

most of the time what happens is a "dead drop." you're family or whatever leaves the item to be smuggled in somewhere on the outside, pay the officer electronically (bitcoin preferred) the officer retrieves the item and then either gives it to an inmate who he works with on your unit (who also gets a cut) or it's left in a "drop spot" somewhere on the unit and the prisoner arranges how to retrieve it.

you also have to realize there are 1 or two officers watching a whole "wing," or dorm, usually one officer in the picket (the control room for the wing or dorm) and one officer actually on the wing, so it's 1 officer walking around a 3 story, maybe 200 yards long hallway with 2 man cells side by side the the length of the "run." usually 33 cells per "run," so, 180 men on a wing.... there's "porters," who are inmates that are on the run with the officer, who shout out the location of the officer to other inmates at all times, keeping security for the inmates.

it's really something, i never knew the realities of the prison system until i saw it first hand, there are some really crazy places that will blow your mind, i was on Beto unit in Texas for about a year, and that unit is WILD, like another world, it's notorious for killings, lots of men there serving very large aggravated sentences, i has the 3 story "wings" system, so basically it's 1 mile long "main run," with wings opening off the side of the main run, opened by officers with traditional keys (not electronic) so nobody gets on or off each wing without being let on or off by the officer, with chow being fed in 2 massive chow halls 3 times a day, sometimes a mile walk from your wing (this is all indoors by the way)

Moral of the story: Do the William Cooper thing. Shoot it out if you have to. Never let them take you alive.

and what's crazy is Texas alone has 140 of these units. yes people DO get lost in the system, die, lose contact with anyone from the outside, just plain get forgotten about... seen it happen, then there's some guys who get in there and really fix their life.

Imagine if it comes to the point where all the guards and wardens die of the virus and all these inmates are stuck in their cells for weeks and months.. they would get to point where they have to eat each other.
