Re: are you in the construction business?
Architect, here. Licensed in, and do work in, Cali and Hawaii.

I've worked from home for 30 years, so no change in that respect.

Do a mix of my own projects and production consulting for other firms (do their working drawings, picking up from Design Development phase).

Luxury homes; 4,000 to 10,000 SF, $500 to $1,000 / SF construction cost.

These projects can take multiple years to complete, as many of them are in highly regulated localities (Coastal Commission in Cali and Special Management Areas in Hawaii; sites right on the beach, in many cases).

Have four large projects still running, and those have been in progress ranging from 1 to 3 years. They'll complete to permit stage, at least... Pretty certain on those. Still getting income from those.

Have a couple of projects in early stages (Schematic Design / Design Development). Not sure if those will go ahead. Mostly depends on Owner's financial position... Those in debt will fold, ones doing it with cash will proceed, most likely. Don't have a bead on that with these two clients.

Just completed writing contracts for a major development with one of my partners, and waiting to see if developers are going to sign and go ahead. This project would be VERY long term - probably ten years' work, all told (not contiguous time - these jobs have bursts of activity, then disappear into bureaucratic black holes for months at a time).

I'm older, have no debt, reasonable cash savings, so will be fine if everything goes dry for a couple years. I've been through three major downturns in my career.

Construction sites around here (Orange County, CA) are still active as of today, but who knows what the future holds?

Even before this all started, though (Covid19), jobs have been going really slow due to labor shortages, I presume. Everyone was busy as hell and highballing their bids. Have a feeling that's gonna' change.

Been tough psychologically.. Since I work at home, I'm at work all the time. All my normal recreational activities have been shut down (Golf, bowling, wife's gym, eating out, etc.). As such, just been playing Scrabble and watching Netflix to pass time while I'm not actually working.

This is going to be bad, folks. In the old days, I did a lot of production housing and light commercial, and when recessions hit, it was always a bloodbath. This one is going to be huge.

They should have just let this virus run, and tell people who were at higher risk to quarantine themselves voluntarily. The economic damage from this is going to kill way more people than the virus ever would have. Book it.

Re: are you in the construction business?
I’m a fire alarm technician in Washington state and I’m lucky that I’m in the service department as far as work goes. So far we have been able to keep me busy with service calls that come in but I have had to stop a couple install jobs due to customers unable to pay us and their mortgage (commercial property work).
The install department is having trouble due to customers putting jobs off indefinitely and the inspections side is seeing people not showing up and taking the 80hr. sick time.
We are on a wait and see time line right now. If customers keep paying their bills I will have work. But as soon as the incoming money slows down too much I will be using COVID19 sick time and vacation pay to ride out the month after that happens.

There have been many recessionary episodes in which construction did not collapse like it has in this Depression. The fact remains that this is a catastrophic collapse, not just a recession. How long the Obama administration can delude the ignorant public into believing that we are in recovery I do not know, but when the general awareness does occur people will start pulling their life investments out of stocks and we could see a sharp market collapse surpassing the one of a year ago.

The Obama administration has not given us jobs. In my opinion, we have to play hardball with the Chinese who are undercutting our currency with their grossly undervalued Yuan. I think it is time for us to take the ball and the bat and go home. (i.e. Shut down the ports to imports of Chinese goods!)

When the Chinese come to our door with cap in hand and beg for us to come out to play, we must insist on an equal playing field.

SoCal ... I'm a Structural Steel PM. We do hotels primarily but also do hospital and school remodels so with the public works we have been able to say we are "essential". Billing is already starting to dry up a little and we have had to narrow our focus as the job sites adjust and try to keep from closing. 2008 destroyed my glazing business and I am still trying to dig myself out of that mess and never have really recovered fully.

This time around it is going to be biblical in business destruction. It looks like construction might hold out a little longer than some which I'm grateful for but the writing is on the wall and we are only kicking a dead horse down the street.

Gonna have to tighten the belts and pull our boots up ... makes me sad how many lives have changed forever and most don't even realize it !!

Plymouth Meeting remodeler and tile guy. luckily, I'm still on a bath project where the homeowner lives alone and doesn't give a shit about the virus. So, I stopped using other guys and just advance the job a little every day. Next week I get to frame a past client's basement, by myself, because he's doesn't give a shit either. It's also because he's getting the work done for about half price.
Hopefully all the other jobs that I had lined up will still be ready when this is over.

The in demand areas won't feel much if at all. Indeed prices in Nashville went UP and inventory down as a bunch of people poured in this month from all kinds of places. I'm a Smart Home Tech consultant in SoCal and get hired by architects and Integrators to design Smart Homes across the country.

I've been W @ H for 21 years so this has not been an issue for me, and my staff do the same.

I've noticed a bit of a slow down with my NYC client bc of their obvious lock down, though my Houston, and San Diego clients are keeping me busy, got 3 sets of plans in last week alone, and existing projects are still moving forward. They are a bit short of staff as some are concerned about working around the virus. Young men with young families. Don't blame them.

The silver lining in all of this is that hopefully the Californians will be hit hard and not be in position to continue to move to other states and drive prices up, we have had that happening here for too long. They sell cracker boxes there for 750k and come here and pay cash buy new trucks and proceed to act like utter pricks, so maybe some good will come out of it all.

Residential construction and remodeling for over 20 years.

Still working Monday through Friday and got so much weekend work I can't get it all scheduled.

BUT....I work from a month long backlog and I'm not doing any bids. So there's a slow down coming my way. I don't think it'll be all that bad. Down here in Arkansas life is mostly normal. Most folks are still working.

They all say our governor is derelict for not issuing a stay at home order. But we closed our schools here before NY did. Less than a thousand confirmed cases in our State.
