Bill Gates was good at writing computer code in the late 1970s, but was even better at stealing other people's work, rebranding it and selling it at inflated prices. The mouse, icon, graphical user interface and much more he and Jobs got from Xerox whose management did not know the value of all this. They let Jobs into PARC to see it all. Gates saw it and then stuck a deal with Jobs and pirated what Jobs had to create Windows beating Jobs/Appke on the release. Watch the movie Pirates of Silicon Valley Xerox publically demonstrated all that tech in the early 1970s. They even had a TV commercial at that time showing email, GUI, etc, in an office setting. "whose management did not know the value of all this" My personal suspicion is that forces from the Military Industrial Complex prevented Xerox from putting this into the public sector, keeping it for themselves instead. By the time they promoted MS Windows, the MIC would have been decades ahead of anything available to the public. Just think, foir example, (if you were around in those days) how much time and effort were needed to get around such design blunders as the "640 KB boundary". All while the MIC continued to soar ahead. IBM was also created by a Wall Street financier and was instrumental in categorizing the prison inmates during the holocaust. They love data. You are right about Xerox/MIC ties of course. If you get to look inside the workings of Xerox you see a style of bureaucracy that is so fubar it can only be military.
