De Blasio, NYC Officials Downplayed COVID-19 Threat After Trump Restricted Travel to China. Here Are 5 Examples.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and his top health official were telling citizens to take the subway and attend parades months after President Donald Trump restricted travel to coronavirus-plagued China.

De Blasio and New York City Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot took turns telling citizens in February and March that the virus was not as widespread as people thought. Data now show that the city is becoming the epicenter for the coronavirus, which has killed 883 New Yorkers.

De Blasio is getting some pushback. CNN’s Jake Tapper, for instance, asked the Democrat on Sunday if his unwillingness to publicly request New Yorkers pull back from New York’s nightlife is partly to “blame for how rapidly the virus has spread across the city?”

City officials were working with the information they had at the time, de Blasio responded, adding: “This was a very different world just a short time ago.” The New York mayor has spent weeks railing against what he believes is the president’s poor response to the virus.


“Here’s reality: This is a war-like situation,” de Blasio said in a March 14 interview with MSNBC’s Joy Reid. “We’re in a wartime scenario with a Mar-a-Lago attitude being used by the federal government,” he added, referencing Trump’s resort in Florida.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will be testing for the coronavirus in people in five major cities who show up at clinics with flu-like symptoms but who test negative for the seasonal varieties.

If that testing shows the virus has slipped into the country in places federal officials don't know about, "we've got a problem," Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told USA TODAY's Editorial Board Monday.

Short of that, Fauci says skip the masks unless you are contagious, don't worry about catching anything from Chinese products and certainly don't avoid Chinese people or restaurants.

"Whenever you have the threat of a transmissible infection, there are varying degrees from understandable to outlandish extrapolations of fear," Fauci said.

Fauci doesn't want people to worry about coronavirus, the danger of which is "just minuscule."

But he does want them to take precautions against the "influenza outbreak, which is having its second wave."

A surprising number of MTA (transit authority, i.e. subway) workers have died from the virus. Metal surfaces, seats, grab bars, etc. make for easy transmission from person to person. Every time I am in the city and use the subway it skeeves the crap out of me.

I wonder why CNN and PMSNBC do not cover this 24/7.

Completely understand, and their pubic transportation inherently puts people closer together.

But....you simply cannot overlook the comments and practices of their local leaders. It's criminal. They--of all people--should have recognized that they are more at risk than virtually any other locality and taken action to reduce the spread of the virus.

They could have:

1. Limited the use of public transportation and strongly urged citizens to stay home/work from home. Don't use public transportation if at all possible.

2. Close restaurants and entertainment venues.

3. Encourage companies to have their employees work from home.

4. School closures.

Instead--they completely dismissed the threat and encouraged people to do things that were counterproductive to their health.

Damn near criminal if you ask me.

Being "small-town" myself, I cringe when I see see a sidewalk with people elbow to elbow 6 to ten people wide flowing for blocks in places like NYC. Sidewalks, escalators and packed elevators. YIKES

You're right about how they downplayed the effects before the had any knowledge. That, at a minimum exposes their ignorance and inept ability to govern.
That being said, once 5 or so active people contracted the virus, it was out of control.

Urban centers, particularly up North, are full of drug users and homosexuals. Those are horrible health habits, except in the mind of degenerate Yankees.

One of the new angles is the alleged racism of the virus. They are saying Blacks get the disease more often than Whites. I do think this will be true going forward. Blacks tend to work more in positions where they interact with people in a risky way and may contract the virus. Also, they tend to be more social and have a hard time following rules. I think going forward you’ll see higher infection rates in Black communities which will be where you see higher rates in rural areas.

Just saw on TV that the ship, Comfort, docked on the Hudson River, wasn't getting many patients. The hospitals in NYC are complaining that they are overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients, so they want the Comfort to take COVID-19 patients now.

So, the population of NYC is 8.623 million, and they are saying there are no other people in NYC needing medical care except those with the virus? Something does not sound right.
