My guess is that they knew it was breaking up a long time ago. I assume that NASA and the like are in possession of very powerful telescopes not available to the general population.

Retail price is north of $8,000. on the used market it can be had for significantly cheaper than that though. Probably less than $2,500.

I dont understand how a comet size of half the sun jist disintegrates in a vacuum space which has no resistance.

This is probably a fragment of a larger comet and this may well be the fragment's first approach to the sun on its own. The orbit is extremely similar, almost identical, to the great comet of 1844. If it had survived this encounter the final orbit on its way out would have already started diverging from the great comet of 1844 due to differences in the positions of the planets between then and now. This suggests to me that it's a fairly recent fragment and may have been part of a larger singular comet until one orbit prior to 1844. See the end of this video for the full breakdown:
