Quoting: Lance Roseman From BC Hmm.... I read the autopsy report. Among other things, the coroner said his hands were as muscular as a gorillas, and riddled with arthritis. Also, they found a hotel key in his intestines... reportedly from a long, strange night in Buffalo circa late 1970s... The report also said he had coronary occulsion (blockage) pretty bad in his arteries, and that his lungs were atrophied pretty badly (he smoked Pall Mall non-filters, 3-5 packs a day for 40+ years), and that his brain had a slimy, translucent substance... (freebase?) I guess you could be right.... but he had really bad diabetes and emphysema.... and looked like an 80-year old man at 53.... I would like to believe, though!!!   |

He had a stroke and forgot how to play music, actually. Merle Saunders helped him re-learn the guitar, which I give MAD PROPS to Merle because Jerry kinda dumped him after Reconstruction (a jazz-psychedelic band from '79) and they didn't speak for many years. But Merle Saunders literally held his hands, and played piano, while Jerry re-learned the guitar. I will NEVER forget Merle's kindness and love, and it's a great story. Also a cool story... in 1983 Jerry and the Boys played in the city of my birth... on my freakin' Birthday, the very night I was born, in the city I was born!!! Hooked since birth! Great birthday! i didn't know jerry and merl had a falling out. glad he invited jerry to play on the blues from the rainforest album. i saw merl at a random fest in '98 or so. made me cry. |
