The Food Chain’s Weakest Link: Slaughterhouses

A relatively small number of plants process much of the beef and pork in the United States, and some of them have closed because workers are getting sick.

Tyson Foods closes Iowa pork plant indefinitely after coronavirus outbreak

“The closure has significant ramifications beyond our company, since the plant is part of a larger supply chain that includes hundreds of independent farmers, truckers, distributors and customers, including grocers,” Chief Executive Steve Stouffer said in a statement. “It means the loss of a vital market outlet for farmers and further contributes to the disruption of the nation's pork supply.”

CLOSER TO MEAT SHORTAGE, PRICES GO WEIRD, WITH TYSON FOODS, 6 MAYOR MEAT PLANTS CLOSED , Others Follow ...

Meat prices are starting to surge on the disruptions. But with slaughterhouses closing, farmers don’t have a market for their animals. That’s causing hog futures to drop, potentially creating a situation where pigs get euthanized and buried as supplies back up. Meanwhile, retail costs may rise as grocery stores mandate rationing on pork chops.

Things are so dire that Iowa, the biggest hog state, activated the National Guard to help protect supplies.

“Meat shortages will be occurring two weeks from now in the retail outlets,” Dennis Smith, a senior account executive at Archer Financial Services, said,

Citing industry sources. “There is simply no spot pork available. The big box stores will get their needs met, many others will not.”

Much has been made of the frozen inventories that are kept in warehouses, which could help cushion the blow of plant closures — as long as they don’t last very long.

Re: Food supply chains starting to crack under Covid-19.
If you have been following this thread then you are aware of what is going on. The supply chain is locking up.

The first to get noticeably hit is pork.

To put it simply: processing plant disruptions are causing a backup at the farms because the hogs cannot be processed. As more hogs are stuck at the farms the prices drop and farmers can’t afford to hold onto them so they are culled. Meanwhile prices increase because of the limited amount available due to reduced finish product.

More concerning is that this same problem can occur anywhere in the supply chain: feed, farms, plants, delivery and retail.

To be clear, this does not just impact the prices and availability of pork chops but everything that uses pork as an additive or primary ingredient.

This can also happen to chicken, beef..etc.

Taken one step further, this can happen to any packaged or refined good.

92 new coronavirus cases found among workers at Missouri pork plant

Ninety-two more workers from a Missouri pork processing plant have been found to have COVID-19 as testing efforts ramped up this week.

The state announced the new cases Thursday after 707 asymptomatic employees of Triumph Foods in St. Joseph were tested Monday. Additional tests are pending for hundreds of other workers who received tests Tuesday and Wednesday.

A total of 126 coronavirus cases have been linked to the pork plant. Prior to the testing this week, 34 of the plant’s workers were already found to be positive for COVID-19.

Almost 900 workers at a Tyson Foods plant in Indiana have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to a report on Wednesday.

The plant, located in Logansport, Ind., has seen 890 of its 2,200 employees test positive in just under a week -- which is more than 40 percent of its workforce. It's one of several Tyson plants across the country that have voluntarily closed due to virus outbreaks.
