However, Daniel slays the dragon by baking pitch, fat, and hair (trichas) to make cakes (mazas, barley-cakes) that cause the dragon to burst open upon consumption. In other variants, other ingredients serve the purpose: in a form known to the Midrash, straw was fed in which nails were hidden,[9] or skins of camels were filled with hot coals,[10] or in the Alexander cycle of Romances it was Alexander the Great who overcame the dragon by feeding it poison and tar.[11] |

Th. Nöldeke, in his study of the Alexander romance noted the similarity of the Syriac version to the story of Daniel’s slaying a dragon with balls of bitumen, dough, and hair, and to the killing of the snake-king Sapor (Šāpūr II, r. 309-79?) through use of camel hides stuffed with straw and charcoal (Jerusalem Talmud, Ned. 3.2; “Beiträge zur Geschichte des Alexanderromans,” in Denkschriften d. Königlichen Akad. d. Wiss., Phil.-hist. Kl., 38, Vienna, 1890, pp. 22, 25). [link to www.iranicaonline.org] Part 4: “Themes” Daniel Ogden takes on Alexander as Dragon-slayer, first mentioned in a Syriac Alexander Romance and by Ferdowsi. In the former, he fills ox hides with poison and oil; in the latter with gypsum, pitch, lead and sulphur. The result is the same: the dragon devours its ‘prey’, auto-combusts, and dies. A Judaeo-Christian precedent may be the story of Bel and the Dragon in the OT Apocrypha. [link to bmcr.brynmawr.edu (secure)] |
