I have worked since I was 12 and am in my 60s. I was moderately successful and had a 2700 square foot home in southern California with a jacuzzi and a second house I rented out. I drove a Mercedes 230 SLK I paid cash for and my ex drove a new BMW. Lost it all when we divorced; but, kept most of my pension when I retired. Tons of health issues and have had two heart attacks. I still feel horrible about how we let down the working class in this country when we sent manufacturing overseas and destroyed their cities. Most people on the coasts didn't seem to care at all.
Well here we are. People on the coasts are now feeling what it feels like to lose a third of your jobs. Suddenly we are sending out checks to people and giving loans to businesses. We didn't do that for the rust belt. In over 40 years the first person to actually try and help the rust belt was Trump and now he is the guy that has pushed to help small businesses.
Don't get me wrong, I never voted for Trump and would never vote for a Clinton or Bush and never have. My point is simple. Now we all know what it feels like to go without work or an income for months, remember the rust belt has been living like this for decades and nobody cared. They voted for Obama who promised change and none came so they voted for Trump and were called deplorable for doing so.
You want to see attitudes change. Tens of thousands of woke social justice warrior kids are about to find out that their small business owner dad is going bankrupt and they will not be able to finish college. Their focus will change real quick and they will be lucky to get a job at a fast food restaurant because they have no experience.
In my first year of college I worked 50 hours a week at a WalMart and went to community college full time too (I think it was 15 hours a week to be considered full time student). One of my fellow students was a beautiful young lady whose father was someone important that lost his job and she had stop attending her ivy league school (I think it was Dartmouth) and it devastated her. She couldn't understand why she was going to a community college with us peasants.
I apologize for rambling. This event that we are living through has a psychological toll for many. The loss of stability and expectation messes people up for the rest of their lives unless they are strong in their heads and hearts. Let us wish all may overcome the effects this will have on their minds. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73506449 I went to law school in the early 80s with a guy from Gary Indiana and still follow what is going on there. Sorry for what happened to your town. The example I usually use is Lima Ohio, where Glee supposedly took place. All nice and successful a town on the show, yeah, in real life it is like Gary Indiana and lost all its industry. People on the coast still think it is like on the tv show Glee. That is the propaganda and ignorance we sell on what happens when you deindustrialize a region. |
