College graduate nerds are embarassed that they wasted so much money on bullshit.
So they perpetuate the myth that a college degree actually means something in real life. Idiots. chuckle

Do you think a medical degree is a "waste", or an engineering/science degree?

Or is it just that you don't have one so you are lashing out?

And what percentage of degrees are "medical, engineering, or hard science and what percentage are fluff? Probably 90% fluff from what I have seen in college. College these days is mostly a money scam.

Yep, degrees are for sale. If you get the government to pay up, they will give you a meaningless degree.

In the 1970s you could go to a good state college for about 200 bucks/semester plus books. Not a half ass watered down community college but a good university getting a first class education.

This could be done again (adjusted for inflation) but too many motherfucking hands in the money train cookie jaw.

Try distinguishing between bullshit feminist/social justice/liberal arts degrees and useful degrees like STEM and medical. Otherwise you are promoting stupidity ignorance and backwardness. We already have plenty of that.

Re: College graduate nerds are embarassed that they wasted so much money on bullshit.
I needed a new laptop. I couldn't believe that there were still $1k and $2k laptops out there! Who the heck needs that? For almost everyone who needs a laptop, the little $300 or $400 ones will work just fine. But it's like everything else - gotta have that $1k phone instead of the older model $150 phone. Gotta have the $150 tennis shoes instead of last year's model (still name brand) on sale for $50. Gotta have a Mercedes or Audi instead of a used Toyota or Ford. Gotta have that $4 cup of coffee every morning and often another time or two through the day. Gotta go out and eat sushi at $100 instead of buying some $10 shrimp on sale and stir-frying it at home. People are what they are - you can try to teach them responsible financial behavior, but it's probably not going to stick.

As far as the education itself goes - there are good educations and bad ones. There are majors that will get you a good-paying job and there are those that won't get you squat. You just need to be careful about your choices. College is still the best way to get ahead in the world.

Well, for many people they really do not have a choice. If you want to be a lawyer - college; if you want to be an architect - college; if you want to be an accountant - college. If people allow themselves to be "brainwashed," they are pretty poor thinkers. It happens, though, and in some majors a whole lot more than others. I have my Master's in an education field. I had one professor who was forever on about white privilege to the point where some of us just wanted to tell her to STFU. But we smiled at her and rolled our eyes at each other. There were a few who fell for it, though. My kids, both engineers, had very little of that to deal with at their university. And their educations were definitely worth the cost (well, actually in Georgia kids get tuition free if they keep their grades up). Still, the other costs were high enough. If you need a college degree to pursue your dream career, you need it. People just need to be smart about financing it and about what they are being taught and filter through the wheat from the chaff.

You seem to excuse the colleges who hire and enable these liberal nutjob "professors." It is nore than just "rolling your eyes." Paying for these idiotic programs and "professors" inflates the costs for everyone. And inflates the cost to the taxpayers who end up paying for such bullshit.

Just taking the postition of "oh well, it is what it is" is not very insightful thinking. That simply perpetuates this rapidly inflating scam on everyone.

Once colleges became "for profit" businesses, it became a runaway cash cow. They convinced everyone that basically every job should require a "degree" no matter how subjective and questionable the degree was in the end.

As far as the college is concerned, every degree is a success because they got paid for it.

That's probably correct. Working in the workplace you learn to ignore the asinine comments and complete the stupid jobs your bosses ask you to do. You learn pretty quickly - fight and die or ignore and live. Same goes with the college professors. For me, I have a goal and I go after that goal. I'm not going to sideline my goal because of an ignorant professor. Right or wrong - you have to pick your battles, or at least I do. If you went in fighting about everything you didn't approve of and every injustice, you would get nothing done and end up broke miserable and a laughing stock. As a kid I was filled with self-righteous indignation quite frequently. Meh - now it only comes to light when it's a battle that's worth fighting. Understand, we all have different battles we think are worth fighting for. This one? Not so much. I figured I'm not going to be swayed. I've taught my kids well and they aren't going to be swayed. Other people's kids - well that's not really my problem if they didn't raise their kids right and to be open and critical thinkers.

There is a time and a place to report a professor who does that kind of thing. In the middle of the semester is not that time and place, IMO. At the end of the semester AFTER you get your grade is the time and the place. They might not get fired at that time, but it does go in their file and after enough complaints, they will get axed. The other thing you have to think about is that some colleges are a lot more liberal than others. If you are a conservative, that liberal college is not the best fit for you. THAT is like joining the football team when you hate football. There is not a lot of sense to it.

I do get where you are coming from. Perhaps it is just an age thing. Or, perhaps it is that I've learned to pick my battles and a liberal college professor is NOT a battle I choose to pick. It's kind of unimportant to me. They have as much right to be liberal as another has to be conservative. Many places even have restrictions about bringing political leanings into a classroom that has nothing to do with politics. I guess I'm just not seeing it as the issue you are because, by college, people normally have their opinions and belief systems formed. Few tried/true libs are going to all of the sudden turn conservative b/c of a professor. Few tried/true conservatives are going to turn liberal because of a professor. A few might listen and entertain some of the ideas promoted, but the vast majority are not going to suddenly flip their value system upside down because of a professor. If you see lib students on a college campus, they were libs before coming to that campus. If you see conservatives on a college campus, they were conservatives before coming to that college campus.

Personally, I am more concerned about elementary, middle, and high school teachers trying to promote ideologies at a time when children are forming their belief systems. But that is a completely different argument from this thread.
