Re: A Friend Just Offered Me Several Fed Out Steers
I was happy as my supply, and my family's supplies are dwindling. After checking all butchers in a large radius I have to turn him down. The soonest I can get them butchered is late October.

$9.00/lb. for ground beef at my local butcher shop.

Most pork producers are euthanizing all of their piglets.

Butchering a steer ain't that bad. For a bandsaw, find an old Craftsman and get fine toothed blade. Set up a fence to help give you the thickness you need. This will get you the steaks.

For hamburger you can find an old sausage grinder and fit a large pulley to it and a very small pulley on an old motor from a dryer. But watch out, the cast iron blades are easy to break. Nowadays I'd just buy the grinder off amazon and plug it in.

There are ways around all this bullshit, we should have already been practicing this stuff.

I have the grinder and saw. These cows are in the pasture two hours away. I thought about this for a day. I am not set up for this.

Many big game hunters could gut and butcher it. I’m sure someone would do it for some free meat

Re: A Friend Just Offered Me Several Fed Out Steers
1) Make friends with a muslim. Halal slaughter done on site is humane and relatively easy. Give them a share for the help.

2) No farmers are euthanizing chickens, pigs or cattle. CAFO's may be (that's industrial agriculture, not farming) but real farms don't have to meet weight guidelines or feed quotas. I wish I could meet the new demand we've had for our chickens, pork and beef. Our business has never been better.

3) Never look a gift horse in the mouth. When someone makes a generous offer, especially one that will feed your family, FIGURE IT OUT. How lazy or incompetent can you possibly be to let that opportunity slip through your hands?
 Quoting: hardscrabble farmer 76531980

Go away, m'kay. You don't have a clue what you are talking about.

My family and I will have beef either way. I don't need a handout. My point wasn't that I was about to starve.

I am only sharing with GLP the state of our food system...it is dire. These are the people who feed the world.
 Quoting: ~Fire Watch~

I operate and live on a family farm that is very successful both economically, personally, and in terms of the community.

How exactly does that imply I haven't a clue?

The reason the "people who feed the world" are failing so miserably right now, to the point that they will euthanize livestock, is that Industrial Agriculture is a poor model subject to all types of disruptions. This time gives us an opportunity to reexamine our beliefs about what constitutes farming and sound practices and what is simply another boondoggle just waiting to collapse under the weight of it's own falsehoods.

But just keep bitching, that's an option too.

Not so easy...come pick them up. No shit...come pick them up.

There is no one to process them. You can't drop off four live steers at the local food pantry

Same situation here. People practically giving hogs and steers away. Butchers are booked up for months. A relative of mine is a butcher, he can't get to anything until August.

Re: A Friend Just Offered Me Several Fed Out Steers
This situation with the farmers and the packing houses is heartbreaking.

Something has to give. We, Americans, just can't let our meat supply rot. Maybe the National Guard can set up to house, feed these animals and set up some kind of packing house/butcher scenario.
