Not really. Smart kid. Money that is gained dishonestly seldom buys happiness.

If he'd taken it, he'd have been locked up for grand theft, and with banks and US currency involved it would have been very bad. They could charge him with a slew of felonies if they wanted to.

PRO TIP: IF you "find" something on someone else's private property and you take it , thats theft.

Say you saw a hundred dollar bill blow across the sidewalk in front of you, up into a nearby yard. If you pick it up and pocket it its theft and the crime is complicated by trespassing, some states call it aggravated theft
Stealing lost property is itself in fact theft. If you pick up my wallet I dropped on the sidewalk and take 1500 dollars out of it, it's not finders keepers loosers weepers, it's a state felony and get to go to the penitentiary .

It shouldn't be too much longer when this will be the norm. You have no idea the karma connected to that money or the natural consequences of taking something that doesn't belong to you.

The law is if you find property that does not belong to you you are to report it to the authorities, not pocket it. In most places if it is not claimed YOU MAY get it back. In this case the kid knew what the money was and whom it belonged to unless he was brain dead, and he knew why it was there.

If this was actually true, the bank would have been named. Contractors to the bank and investors would need an explanation, and there would be policy changes involved.

If they are not citizens, give the kid and family citizenship.

He'd have gotten caught for sure had he tried to run with it but man....it sure would be tempting!
 Quoting: Halsey Knox

I’m sure he was on camera if it was right in front of the atm. But would the bank have even realized it was missing?

I’m not sure what I would have done. I found a wad of cash once as a teen and kept it, but it was only $90 crumpled up laying in a ditch. There was no wallet or anything. I only return things if I can figure out who they belong to. It’s not stealing if it’s got no owner. Every time I’ve found jewelry and tried to find the owner, I get a bunch of lying scammers trying to claim it instead.

I guess the smart thing would be to hang onto it for one year. If the bank calls up you could just give it back. He didn’t know whose it was.

I would not deposit that much money, though, without a clean trail for it.

This is similar to when someone finds a stash of gold coins on their own land and it gets taken away. I don’t consider that stealing
