If this was actually true, the bank would have been named. Contractors to the bank and investors would need an explanation, and there would be policy changes involved.
Me thinks this was a made up feel good story.

Sorry, seems like a good story, but too many holes.
There are a lot of these floating around.

Whether true or not, could have been drug money and they'd come after him, so I think he did right thing

Exactly, they - the bank - would know who left this and who saw this.
the bank would be taking their own actions.

Re: A teen found $135,000 next to an ATM. Instead of walking away with it, he called police
He'd have gotten caught for sure had he tried to run with it but man....it sure would be tempting!
 Quoting: Halsey Knox

I’m sure he was on camera if it was right in front of the atm. But would the bank have even realized it was missing?

I’m not sure what I would have done. I found a wad of cash once as a teen and kept it, but it was only $90 crumpled up laying in a ditch. There was no wallet or anything. I only return things if I can figure out who they belong to. It’s not stealing if it’s got no owner. Every time I’ve found jewelry and tried to find the owner, I get a bunch of lying scammers trying to claim it instead.

I guess the smart thing would be to hang onto it for one year. If the bank calls up you could just give it back. He didn’t know whose it was.

I would not deposit that much money, though, without a clean trail for it.

This is similar to when someone finds a stash of gold coins on their own land and it gets taken away. I don’t consider that stealing
 Quoting: Arkansassy

If you find money crumpled up in a ditch to be fair there is no way to know who it belongs to unless they who claim to have lost it know how much it was. If they do it was theirs unless you blabbed.

I found a metal box on the side of the road once, burst open and full of negotiable bonds. I figured they were stolen and turned them in, once I touched that shit I was the prime suspect! I also saw a guy who was broke down on the side of the highway rolling his spare tire up into the woods one time and waited til the cover of darkness to go retrieve it.

When I cut it open it was full of meth so I just walked off. Had it been drug money I'd have kept it.

Is it really stealing to find money sitting on the ground? Even if you didn’t spend it? How much money does it have to be to be considered stealing?

Pretty smart i think. Banks have surveilance cameras. Had he taken the money, how long do you think it would be before he got a tap on the shoulder? Also, its stealing! Big fine and jail time too.
