Bad science. Most of these guys have mental problems even before they started using.

Self medication because of underlying mental illness is prevalent around the world for thousands of years. Many discontinue pharmaceuticals for mental illness, and instead use Cannabis.

My husband is using it to self medicate his combat ptsd and has turned very ugly and mean. He’s been very very verbally abusive and I fear sometimes he I will eventually cross that line into physical abuse (he’s come close)

We have been together for 9yrs and this only started this bad since he started smoking weed for self medicating....this year: he has told me he will smoke weed everyday. This isn’t the life I signed up for.

He needs counseling with other vets, not weed, it intensifies paranoia and fear, which then comes out as anger as an expression.

Help him get to some counseling, don't give up.

You don't know what some people have been through.

Sometimes weed can make things worse, I've lived through it so I know its true.

This is the problem with weed not being prescription, people get off of everything and get on just weed whereas if it were prescription, or at least accepted by the VA, he could be doing weed under supervision, with talk therapy and something for the rage he seems to be feeling as he processes old memories with no support. Did he recently quit a drug or drugs to start cannabis? Weed needs to at least be as accepted as alcohol so clinicians can at least work around it, if not accept it as part of practice. Can you redirect him to hemp?

All the violent weed people I have seen have also been using meth. In some form or the other.

Unfortunately the world of behaviour isnt solely tied to only things you have seen.

We dont have meth in britain & Hashish is cannabis resin. It was the most popular form of cannabis found here in the 80s and 90s.

Right now I really think it’s either the strains he’s using or maybe it’s not working with the medication he’s already on. Cause things are out of control here. He realizes there’s a problem and he needs to get with the vA doctor about his meds.... I’m not entirely sure if he stopped taking the other medication. This self medicating is not working though. I even suggested doing some microdosing with maybe 5ml thc drops of something but he wants to be high high. Oh and he does have a history of drug and alcohol abuse he has been to rehab quite a few times before we met

Its not the only drug with paradoxical effects, and its an efficient pain reliever. Compared to SSRIs, which also have paradoxical effects like increasing suicide risk, cannabis is being held to an impossibly high bar for a drug. Its a drug, some people will react badly to it. MAOIs are still available, is it more dangerous than them?


PTSD veterans are going to use drugs. Some are helped by cannabis, some are not.Some are helped by SSRIs, some are not.

Its a drug, its not magic.

The risks of polypharmacy are enormous, but at least less fatal with weed. That's why the veteran needs to feel they can talk to their clinician about their weed use (or any other drug use for that matter) and get non-judgemental advice back and a treatment plan reflecting their real current condition.

He probably won’t try cbd without the thc. He’s set that weed is his solution right now though he also can admit it’s not helping it’s making it worse.

Until he deals with the demons, that's the way it'll be then.
