Massive China Military *Exercise* in August to Simulate Taking Strategic Taiwan Islands

China plans landing drill for Pratas Islands as US ramps up military activity in sensitive Taiwan Strait
The large-scale landing drill is planned to simulate the possible future seizure of the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands

Excerpts -

Japan’s Kyodo News reported earlier this week that the Chinese People’s Liberation Army intended to hold a beach landing simulation off Hainan Island, China’s southernmost province, which would mobilise marines, landing ships, hovercrafts and helicopters.

It cited unnamed Chinese sources as indicating the exercise may game out a scenario of capturing Pratas, also known as Dongsha, which is strategically important for China’s advance into the Pacific Ocean.

The island, 530 miles southwest of Taipei, is home to a small airfield used mainly by the Taiwanese military.

China preparing to conduct an exercise which will simulate an assault on Taiwanese islands

Excerpts -

The People’s Liberation Army is preparing for a gargantuan “training exercise” in the South China Sea, one designed to simulate the assault and takeover of Taiwanese island chains.

No longer attempting to hide their future intentions, the Chinese Communist Party will be conducting their exercises via the Southern Theater Command, and will utilize helicopters, marines, hovercrafts and assault vessels, in the hopes of learning how to better orchestrate a takeover of the Dongsha Islands (also known as the Pratas Islands).

PLAN forces already control Hainan Island as a major seaport for military operations, but American patrols in the region have increased the need for newer islands.

China’s Secret Military Plan: Invade Taiwan by 2020
Book based on internal documents says Beijing's invasion plan would trigger U.S.-China conflict

Excerpts -

China has drawn up secret military plans to take over the island of Taiwan by 2020, an action that would likely lead to a larger U.S.-China conventional or nuclear war, according to newly-disclosed internal Chinese military documents.

The secret war plan drawn up by the People's Liberation Army (PLA), the Chinese Communist Party's armed forces, calls for massive missile attacks on the island, along with a naval and air blockade that is followed by amphibious beach landing assaults using up to 400,000 troops.

Coast Guard to hold live-fire exercises near Taiwan's Pratas islands

Announcement comes after reports of Chinese drills in South China Sea planned for August

[link to www.taiwannews.com.tw (secure)]

Excerpts -

The Taiwanese Coast Guard announced Wednesday (May 12) that the Dongsha Islands Garrison is scheduled to conduct an annual firing exercise around the islands in June.

Reports on Monday stated that China’s People's Liberation Army (PLA) plans to hold a large-scale landing exercise in the South China Sea in August to simulate an invasion of the Taiwan-controlled Dongsha islands (Pratas islands, 東沙群島). Kyodo News reported that the PLA's landing exercise would be supervised by the Southern Theater Command and involve large numbers of landing ships, hovercraft, helicopters, and marines.

Two squadrons of the Coast Guard’s Dongsha Command are stationed on both sides of the islands, according to UDN. In addition, 20 and 40-mm guns, 81 and 120-mm mortars, and other light infantry equipment are distributed all over the islands, and military installations have been renovated in recent years.

Now the Chinese are threatening the same -

China warns it could turn military exercises into invasion of Dongsha, Penghu, and Taiwan
Beijing mouthpiece says China could turn Hainan war games into invasion in response to Taiwan secessionists

Excerpts -

In response to Japanese media reports that China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) is planning on holding war games in August to prepare for a future assault on the Taiwan-controlled Dongsha Islands (Pratas Islands), China on Wednesday (May 13) threatened that it could turn the military exercises into an invasion of the island and even Taiwan proper itself.

The Chinese tabloid then cited "military expert" Song Zhongping as saying that the Dongsha Islands are in a key location off the southeastern coast of China that links the South China Sea and West Pacific. Seeming to allude to a potential pretext for invasion, Song warned that if Taiwan leased the island to the U.S. military for surveillance or anti-submarine activities, "this could be dangerous to the PLA."

Song then ominously stated that the landing drills were preparations for seizing Taiwan's outer islands as well as its main island. He warned that the games could be quickly converted into an actual invasion in response to unspecified activities by "secessionists"

nothing personal against you OP

Nixon visited China to gain more leverage over relations with the Soviet Union. When the communists took over mainland China in 1949 and the nationalists fled to the island of Taiwan, the United States allied with, and recognized, the Republic of China as the sole government of China.

US policy is for one China, and the peaceful integration of Taiwan. To that end the US has sworn by treaty to defend Taiwan from an invasion, but China can absorb Taiwan peacefully at anytime.

China would be foolish to invade, wise to negotiate.

While I’m sure China have run tabletop and similar exercises relating to an invasion of Taiwan, the fact that they are doing a live mass exercise tells me they’re getting ready to do something.

Scotland Launched an Invasion During the Black Death. Does History Tell China to Attack Taiwan?
Put simply, coronavirus may put Taiwan in China’s crosshairs as much as the bubonic plague put England in Scotland’s sights.
May 2, 2020
[link to nationalinterest.org (secure)]

When the Black Death ravaged Europe in the mid-fourteenth century, the soldiers of Scotland saw opportunity in crisis. First hitting England in 1348, the plague’s deadly spread across the country spurred the Scots to perceive an ideal moment to conquer their neighbors by staging an invasion of northern England in 1349. Might a power in today’s coronavirus-stricken world take advantage of temporary alterations to the global strategic environment for its geopolitical gain?

Enter China.

China Marine Corps on show in the South China Sea
May 17, 2020

Excerpts -

The strength of the Marine Corps, or PLANMC, has nearly tripled over the past three years to 35,000 troops, according to a report prepared by Jane’s

The corps is expected to feature in another military exercise planned in the South China Sea in August. This time, they will be simulating an island seizure operation

the PLANMC is meant to be the “nucleus” for China’s armed forces as they operate further afield. “The PLA is intent on improving its expeditionary capabilities and the Marines are considered a key — if not the core — component of this expeditionary force.”

for China’s military planners, the PLANMC is a high priority because of their amphibious capabilities. “The Marines are supposed to be a rapid response force,”

A Huge Fleet Of 117 Tankers Is Bringing Super Cheap Crude To China
May 16, 2020
[link to oilprice.com (secure)]

a total of 117 very large crude carriers (VLCCs) – each capable of shipping 2 million barrels of oil – are traveling to China for unloading at its ports between the middle of May and the middle of August. If those supertankers transport standard-size crude oil cargoes, it could mean that China expects at least 230 million barrels of oil over the next three months

The fleet en route to China could be the largest number of supertankers traveling to the world’s top oil importer at one time, ever

US Navy sends subs to sea as message to China
May 18, 2020
[link to americanmilitarynews.com (secure)]

The Pacific Fleet Submarine Force took the unusual step this month of announcing that all of its forward-deployed subs were simultaneously conducting “contingency response operations” at sea in the Western Pacific — downplaying the notion that Navy forces have been hampered by COVID-19.

The sub force said the missions were mounted in support of the Pentagon’s “free and open Indo-Pacific” policy aimed at countering China’s expansionism in the South China Sea.

At least seven submarines, and likely more — including all four Guam-based attack submarines, the San Diego-based USS Alexandria and multiple Hawaii-based vessels — are part of the effort...
