Rome thought it could make every country in the world submit to it's authority and brought devastation to any country that resisted. Eventually most of the country's joined together and kicked Rome's ass back into the stone age. The rise of Rome took a few hundred years, the death of Rome took 50 years. This time frame would be very comparable to the USA, and the end result may be very similar, and ironically for all the same reasons.
