Shopping Cart Theory: the ultimate test of whether someone is a dick or a decent person

The shopping cart is the ultimate litmus test for whether a person is capable of self-governing.

To return the shopping cart is an easy, convenient task and one which we all recognize as the correct, appropriate thing to do. To return the shopping cart is objectively right. There are no situations other than dire emergencies in which a person is not able to return their cart. Simultaneously, it is not illegal to abandon your shopping cart. Therefore the shopping cart presents itself as the apex example of whether a person will do what is right without being forced to do it. No one will punish you for not returning the shopping cart, no one will fine you or kill you for not returning the shopping cart, you gain nothing by returning the shopping cart. You must return the shopping cart out of the goodness of your own heart. You must return the shopping cart because it is the right thing to do. Because it is correct.

A person who is unable to do this is no better than an animal, an absolute savage who can only be made to do what is right by threatening them with a law and the force that stands behind it.

The Shopping Cart is what determines whether a person is a good or bad member of society.

The problem with your premise, is that to assume that some course of action is right and correct while other courses of action are unright or incorrect... I'd completely false.

Morality is a psychological concept not absolute reality. If mortality were something real, then i would ask you to show it to me physically. Show me a photo of morality. Not people acting in a moral manner. Show me actual morality. Can't do, because it only exists in your mind.

That being said, then the concept of morality can simply be replaced with a other concept to see if your premise holds water.

So- some cultures think that looking other people in the eyes is threatening and unwanted. So they don't do it. To them, the obvious right and correct course of action is to NOT look others in the eyes.

But in America, it is considered valuable to the interaction to look others in the eyes. So Americans do that, and in their minds, it is the correct and right course of action.

So now we have one concept with 2 different courses of action considered right and correct depending on the value attached to that concept.

So your premise doesn't hold water.

In my paradigm, I return the cart. Whether it is to the store or the corral in the parking lot, I do it. In my paradigm, if you leave a cart abandoned in the middle of the lot, you can just go and eat a loaded diaper.

I'll bet one day we'll see a post from OP entitled : "I Was Run Down By an SUV While Returning a Shopping Cart!"

Whoever made that video, harassing the guy about the cart, needs to get punched really fucking hard, multiple times. Again, catch me on a bad day, and I might of just snapped on him.

They hire people to go retrieve the carts as a courtesy to the customers, so that the customers do not have to return the cart. You are trying to make a moral argument out of that?

OP, should we also mop the floor on our way out? I mean , it might be morally irresponsible of us to leave dirt on the floor and make the grocery store hire someone to clean it up.

You mean those cart racks in the parking lot or pushing the cart all the way back to the origin? For example - I grab the cart in the parking lot cart rack and return it to the cart rack but taking it back all the way to the store, no, it is too far to go. I think you hypothesis is a little bit flawed OP.

I agree and disagree. In a normal case, cart corrals would be convenient and it's just common courtesy to return the cart to the corral so that it doesn't block parking spots, the wind doesn't blow it into other cars, and so the attendants don't have to go all over the place to collect the carts.

However, I have been to a couple of very large stores where cart corrals are only located near the store. Which means, if it is a very busy day and you get stuck parking way out in the north 40, you might have to push that cart 100 yards or more back to the corral. Plus, some stores don't even have corrals and it's not convenient when you have ice cream melting or little kids to push that cart all the way back inside the store. I don't blame people for diching their carts under the nearest tree in those cases - that's kind of a store issue not a customer issue.

You literally want to take good out of people's mouth's don't you? Do you realize that most retail workers are part time? They are used as needed and if everyone put there cart back then those hours assigned for parking lot cart patrol would be gone... I suppose you want everyone to be sure to put anything they grab back where they grabbed it from and bag there own groceries too
