Yes, for example woman's nail salons they have to charge you more money to get your nails done while putting up plastic plexiglass screens to protect you and the staff and on top of all that garbage the stores must also provide you hand sanitizer even if you don't use it. So that is money spent they lose on every month all while charging you higher prices.

This might be a good time to become an artisan of some type. People are gonna want unique stuff that does not look just like the stuff everybody else has cause there are only 3 stores that survived. I also think a lot of people may develop a screw Amazon attitude, or well may I say more people will.

What else did I buy there....a rattan desk and chair...and I think a little wooden elephant statue that I keep next to my genie brass lamp

I've been to Pier 1 Imports maybe a half-dozen times in the last 20 years.

The things I recall are:

1. The stores were not terribly clean.
2. The staff was sparse to the point of being invisible until you went to the cash registers.
3. The staff, if you could find one, were generally unhelpful and resented you interrupting them chatting with their co-workers.
4. The merchandise was mostly 2nd and 3rd rate imports. Poorly made, and often times ugly as sin in strange colors that no one would knowingly use.

There is no surprise that Pier 1 went out of business. The amazing thing is that they managed to stay in business for their claimed 58 years.

It seems that the buying public in the US can only be fooled for a limited period of time - even by a corporation as expert at peddling cheap merchandise as Pier 1 was.

I'm not sorry to see them fold (with the exception of the employees, which they're no doubt going to cheat out of their final checks, pension contributions, and anything else they can manage.)

Those dirty, ill-maintained, smelly little stores will not be missed by me or anyone else I know. I suppose the larger stores could be opened up and turned into indoor parking garages, once the smell dissipates.

Yes, definitely got some artisan-styled vases and amphoras that I have on glass shelves. Bought them 20 years ago at pier 1

I've always believed these big box stores were operating far beyond what normal profitable businesses were capable of doing and were just burning through money given to them as stock market share investments when they became a publicly traded corporation, just like ALL the big box stores. All of it an illusion paid for by bullshit 401k that will crash down to nothing one day
