Its about damn time!
I started working on the atmospheric compensation experiment as a Space Shuttle Payload Engineer back in 1983.
At that time, Rocketdyne had put about $100M into chemical laser research.
In the SDI (Star Wars) program we had solid state lasers, chem lasers, free electron lasers, and nuke-pumped lasers (last one did not work).
We really need to do something to push the bureaucracy out of the way and get weapons fielded faster.
