Quoting: Q33 All Hype! Eggs doubled in price here in north-central Maine for a few weeks, but seem to be coming back down some now. There were limits of 2 dozen in some stores, too. I can get eggs 99 cents a dozen in Colorado We could get "medium" (i.e. TINY) for that before Covid...now those are about $1.59. Jumbos and X-large are what we prefer to get but those shot up to $3.99. Back down to about $1.99 now... |

User ID: 61502442 United States 05/23/2020 10:43 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We got notice a little over a week ago to change our packaging and thickness of cuts. Kinda like they do with potato chips and cereal , packaging less weight, because of increase in prices per pound. Quoting: MKPitBull Example , instead of reg cut of grilling steaks being 1- 11/4 in, they’re now 1/2-3/4 in. So.... also the pork and chicken we get in is frozen rock solid. Takes a day of it sitting unrefridgerated to even halfway thaw to cut it. Would explain the weird coloring of some meats aswell. If you cut it partially frozen it doesn’t bloom out well. You can’t scrape the bone dust off either. I've got a friend who is a meat inspector for our state. I've been told it's going to be a rough few months for meat availability until things get back to normal processing. The entire supply chain is structured on the just-in-time mindset. Once a kink got thrown in, the whole process got derailed. Fyi, went to a military commissary in south MS this week for a specialty item, so stopped to view the meat dept. They normally have large slabs of beef rib eyes and tenderloin for those who buy in bulk. None to be seen. Instead, they had packaged tenderloin selling for $14.98/lb! Is this commissary only open to members of the military, or...? I am very curious to hear if military folks are "in this together" with the rest of us. (LOL.) Yes, can only access base with military ID, then must present again at the commissary. Typically, they have decent prices on meat, but not this time.... Not sure about active duty members, as we are retired military, but I can tell you that all the vets we know stocked up on everything ahead of time. But living in south Louisiana, we stock up on pantry goods, to and water every hurricane season. We just did it early this year and added more meat to the mix. GeauxTigahs |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 76809123 United States 05/23/2020 11:12 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Go directly to the farmers... esp pork... they are having to kill the animals b/c the animals will be too big, and dangerous to take to the slaughter houses when they are able to open back up. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78711679 You can arrange to have your animal to be delivered to a local mom, and pop butcher... who can process it for you. Split the cost with neighbors, and/or friends if you don't have enough freezer space, or enough $$ for the whole animal. Sometimes you can have the animal processed at a cheaper rate if you give a portion of the meat in place of some of the money... and they can then sell the meat that you gave them to still be profitable for them. That’s what we did. Got a Berkshire for $1.05lb on the hoof. Picking up a half angus in two weeks for $3lb hanging weight (includes cut, wrap, kill fee) I called a butcher in a small town and they hooked me up, but locally it’s a 3-4 mo waiting list so if you are in the fence find one NOW to reserve. Even the pork we bought he said we called just in time because they are booked months out now. Total price on a half is around $1300 for 435 lbs. should end up with around 260lbs in the freezer. We split both with in laws so it’s affordable. We are also picking up 10 meat birds and a turkey next week. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 76938692 United States 05/23/2020 11:16 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Western Ma here. Stores have been limiting meat purchases to 2 - 2 chicken, 2 beef. This has been going on for three weeks now. One store was out of hamburg and another was out of chicken. Meat hasn't been on sale either. Went for take out at our favorite Chinese Rest and could only order smalls. The owner said she is having trouble getting beef and pork. She orders four cases of beef and gets three. I did wonder what would happen when all the restaurants got up and running - now I know. Ordered a quarter beef that will be ready in 5 weeks. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 77388003 United States 05/23/2020 11:19 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Plenty of venison in the freezer, plenty of eggs in the chicken coop. Neighbor has raw goat milk. Was a little frustrated about flour, but honestly been having issues with that since Christmas time. ( Usually get 20# KAF at Walmart and they've been out forever) but I do have grain and a mill if needed...and another neighbor who grows organic grain for a major supplier and will sell me a bag of wheat cheap. No real change in our local supplies. |
