Anonymous Coward User ID: 76866137 United States 05/24/2020 04:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | " The rationale here, as Esper summarized in a recent interview on CNBC, is that the United States is in a new “era of ‘great power competition,’ and that means we need to focus more on high intensity warfare going forward.” For the United States, “our long-term challenges,” Esper continued, “are China, No. 1, and Russia, No. 2. And what we see happening out there is a China that continues to grow its military strength, its economic power, its commercial activity, and it’s doing so, in many ways, illicitly — or it’s using the international rules-based order against us to continue this growth, to acquire technology, and to do the things that really undermine our [and our allies’] sovereignty, that undermine the rule of law, that really question [Beijing’s] commitment to human rights.” Esper’s argument is compelling because it includes a bit of truth: China is a rising power and our economic rival. It is growing in military strength, and it does engage in illicit business practices, including hacking and theft of trade secrets. Beijing has acted without regard for other nations’ sovereignty (which is not to say Washington is innocent of the charge), and its treatment of the Uighur people and response to the new coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan have settled, once again, any remaining question of whether the Chinese government has adequate respect for human rights. None of this is in dispute, except perhaps by Beijing’s propagandists. But none of it remotely justifies twisting great power competition into a shooting war." |

India would be justified in attacking those soldiers, and we should stand by India if things go nuclear. So what exactly is different to this than what Americans and british did ? We have not made a major land grab in a very long time, so the obvious difference is the Chinese are doing it today, where as we did it in the distant past. We did many things in the past that would not be tolerated today. Slavery, for example, was tolerated in the past but has no place in the western world today. The crusades are another example. Somewhere along the line our society evolved and we decided that it was wrong to do these things. Unfortunately, the Chinese never came to that conclusion. That's the problem. You cannot excuse the action of an evil dystopian power by pointing out that other evil powers did the same thing in the past. It's like saying "yeah I raped a woman, but that guy over there did the same thing a couple of decades ago!" It doesn't change the fact that the current rapist needs to be stopped from raping more women. The same applies to China - Chinese expansion should not be tolerated. Indian army has been involved in thousands of skirmishes at Indo-Pak border. They have been battling Islamic terrorists in Kashmir for three decades and maoists in jungles of east India. Chinese troops will flee to their bunkers within few hours if a real war breaks out between the two countries. The honest man must be a perpetual renegade. |
