Question for someone that is smart about online business/web design
Hi,

Not sure who to ask, so why not go to GLP, my favorite place on the internet.

I have an idea to start a website, a sort of eBay-type thing. I'm not sure if the idea has been taken yet, or even if it's a good idea at all hehe... but it's been floating around in my head for a few years, and now with the corona bs I feel like it would be a good time to give it a shot and take the first step.

How do I move ahead without knowing anything about making websites and without revealing too much about my idea to the wrong person? I have never thought about starting a business. Thanks!

Probably best to learn how to do all the coding and design of the website yourself, or someone else might steal the idea from you. (didn't Zuck do that with facebook?)

Also, then you'd know how to work on and revise it, without having to hire others.

Don't talk about it with anyone.

Learn to code!

1) Everyone has an idea, some are great, most are awful or timing is bad... don't be afraid to share your best ideas if you don't know how to execute.

2) If you know how to execute, almost any idea is pretty good, so don't get hung up on the idea.

3) The single biggest barrier you will run into NOW is red tape. There is almost no way to start a small business these days.

4) This is probably not your business plan (I hope), but read this article as if it was business advice... it's actually great:

I'm at a beginner's level zero for anything computer-related but perhaps there are templates I can add on to to start. If it turns out that more effort will pay off, I will learn how to do it myself for sure. Thanks for the advice!

If you want to build an e-commerce site, look into 3dcart. You just add your content and products and go. 3dcart handles hosting, SSL cert, and all the tech stuff. You can plug your store into major shopping sites and social media. You manage marketing and promotions. There are many site templates to choose from. And the better templates include tablet and smart phone versions of the site. They have decent tech support, too.

With the preface, was not expecting that link lol, I'll check it out.

I doubt that I would be passionate about maintaining the project after completion. My goal is really to create a prototype that sort of gets it started, and sell it to someone else I guess...

Well, just remember that the ONLY thing that matters in online business valuation is users.

So... realize that in order to sell for any kind of profit... you need users. 25k active users is sell-able though. You don't need millions.

Fist in the Box, for some reason it won't let me quote you.

3D cart looks like it offers a lot of different templates. I'll make it my homework. I don't think there will be any products sold or shipped with this thing but it will probably be something you pay for monthly to use.

I'm glad I posted here today.

I see that is important, to present the thing when it can show it has already gained interest... now how to do that without revealing what is unique about it.
