Unattractive women like her used to get married and have children when they were still young enough to catch a man. It would have given her a purpose in life, something to love and look after, security and a sense of fulfillment, but she chose career path and a lifetime of loneliness and isolation.

Cities are the worst place to live, everyone is a stranger and a potential threat including a nerdy bird watcher. The bird watcher is equally guilty for not minding his own business. The tone of her voice and her hysterical reaction to the nerdy bird watcher aren't something that came from a justified response to a threat, it was on a low boil for years just waiting for an interaction that wasn't purely in her favor. That was the reaction of someone who was just waiting to explode and the way she treated her dog demonstrated just how borderline crazy her mental condition really was. No one who loves their pet treats it like that for any reason short of saving it's life.

Her career. Ha! A job is just a job. All the degrees, years at work, accomplishments or achievements she's had with them count for jack shit. A company is not a husband.
