Homeschooling tips for first time homeschooling
Any advice or tips that I could learn from homeschooling pros? I plan on homeschooling this fall and I won't be doing the crisis distance learning thing. Any tips on materials that worked, schedules, or anything else are appreciated. I'll be teaching grade 2. Tia

Re: Homeschooling tips for first time homeschooling
We homeschooled from 1st grade to 8th grade for all 3 of our kids.

First thing to know is it’s a full time job. Don’t be one of the slackers who ruins their kids’ futures by not preparing them accordingly of having an accredited curriculum that you register with the state. You’ll need it for college.

Structure their days clearly so they know what to expect. Kids thrive on schedules and structure.

Make sure you are proficient at the math they will be learning. As soon as they get it and know it, move on to the next. They’ll be skipping grades quickly.

My 15 year old is in his second year of college and has a 4.0. He writes a little bit of code and will likely make money programming from home next year. My 14 year old daughter runs an online business that is growing rapidly.

Involve your kids in other activities like open enrolled school sports. They need social interaction as much as an education. Be careful of some homeschool groups. There can be some crazies out there and avoid “unschoolers” who teach their kids nothing. Unschoolers should be put in jail.

Home schooling is a big responsibility. Go at it in a professional manner. Also take weekly field trips and have a lesson planned for that trip.

Make them read read read. Not silly fiction books but stuff that’ll give them real knowledge.

Best of luck.

Re: Homeschooling tips for first time homeschooling
Thanks for the info...what are the crazies you have encountered? I'm curious, what exactly is unschooling? I only plan to homeschool until it's safe to go back. The crisis computer learning was terrible. I want to do a very good job and think that homeachool would be more stable than what they were doing the past few months.. Does anyone know about classical conversations? Good or bad?

Patience. If you can’t be nice, walk away for a bit. That’s the only thing I would have changed, just to be a little more kind.
