"The University of Connecticut student wanted for two homicides, kidnapping and others crimes was apprehended without incident Wednesday night near a Maryland truck stop.

Police said Peter Manfredonia was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals and Maryland’s Washington County Sheriff’s Office near the Pilot Travel Center, a truck stop on Halfway Boulevard in Hagerstown, Md.

In a press conference late Wednesday night, Connecticut State Police Trooper First Class Christine Jeltema said officers found a gun in the area where Manfredonia was arrested that appeared to be the same weapon used to kill his former Newtown High School classmate last weekend in Derby."

The detective speaking with the U.S. Marshals Service had just mentioned Manfredonia’s height of around 6-foot-3 or 6-foot-4, when that other member of law enforcement spotted him, according to Lt. Michael Pendleton of the Connecticut State Police. The detective then looked and saw the man was wearing red sneakers, a detail Pennsylvania State Police had mentioned after the Wednesday sighting.

“At that point, the sideview profile matched the photos that we had,” Pendleton said.

The law enforcement team approached Manfredonia with their weapons drawn and ordered him to get on the ground, he said.

“At that point, he went on the ground, he did not resist, and absolutely no force was used to affect the arrest,” Pendleton said.

A motive for the attacks is still unclear. The senior at the UConn joint School of Engineering/School of Business Management and Engineering for Management program has been struggling with mental health concerns and was receiving support from his family and therapists, said Michael Dolan, an attorney for Manfredonia's family.
The family told CNN through their attorney "they are relieved that Peter brought this to a peaceful conclusion."
Manfredonia represented himself in a court hearing on Thursday and waived his extradition, surrendering voluntarily to be moved to Connecticut. He joined the hearing via video conference from jail and answered on his own behalf, declining representation.

Manfredonia also led police to a black bag containing a gun, believed to be the one used to kill Eisele, that was about 200 yards away, officials said.

Manfredonia was scared and exhausted when he surrendered, said Michael Dolan, a Connecticut lawyer representing Manfredonia's family. Dolan said he talked with Manfredonia on Wednesday night.

"The family was relieved that this ended peacefully," Dolan said. "They're anxious for his return to Connecticut."

Dolan said Manfredonia had a history of depression and anxiety, but had never shown signs of violence. Manfredonia, a Newtown native, was an honors engineering student at UConn, Dolan said.
