NYC Police State vs. Bicyclists

A vast departure from the New York once emblematic of the guaranteed freedoms and unprecedented opportunity available in the land of America that activist reporters from WeAreChange.org captured in cinematic strides, juxtaposing the hopeful life of music, food, drinks, music and city life with the harsh, grinding rhythm of police control, crowd management, check points, random (illegal) searches and other routine, systematic violations of the Constitution.

Police State & Critical Mass in New York makes a case-study out of the state of "security" as it has solidified since the "terrorist" attacks that took place nearly six years ago. Absent is almost any sense of freedom as police surround a peaceful congregation of bicyclists known as "Critical Mass" who tour through the city. Police regarded them as a quasi-demonstration and ensued ticketing, arresting and harassing any and all of them on no pretense at all.

Amongst the chaotic swirl of the bikes, cars and people are claustrophobic pedestrian walkways lined with officers shouting at cameras while captured and detained cyclists wait on the curb, some in handcuffs.

Down the way, another cyclist explains how police forced him into the middle of the road for the sole purpose of ticketing him. Clearly others on bikes were simply going from point-to-point, and not affiliated with the quasi-demonstration yet were ticketed and arrested. A man is cuffed and taken away without cause after speaking through a cardboard-megaphone things like "Grow up, Read the Constitution."

But the officers have "orders to clear the block," and everyone must obey. Only someone yells back,

"What's next? Put us in pens?"

"What's next? Put us in railroad cars?"

"What's next?"

ummm.......im all for bicylists ,being one myself, but from what ive seen about critical mass it isnt helping anything.....its pissing people off......its one thing to rally for a cause but critical mass is for pissing cars off.......no other reason.........hey lets take up the whole road and block traffic...they cant do anything cuz theres so many of us...oh yea thats helping

pls dont file all bicyclists into the same catagory as the critical mass people........not all critical mass people are bad but from what ive seen theres always some trouble makers in the pack

Re: NYC Police State vs. Bicyclists
aghhh! don't get me started on cyclist vs police, esp: those bastard 'care in the community 'lego' cops!'

I've been on critical mass cycle rallies in London, where we rode in the middle of the road, much to the annoyance of motorists. I heard this black taxi cab pipping his horn frantically behind us, but just ignored him. But then I heard a kerfuffle behind me as this fucking taxi driver blatantly run about half a dozen cyclists out of this way, including me by this stage. One bike was wrecked, some of us got some minor injuries like cuts & bruising, but he just drove on by without a damn in the world. The police were right beside us, didn't do a thing at all about it, despite a wail of complaints.

I'm sick of the police, esp: the lego police, who keep hassling us to 'get off' our bikes. I was fined £30 in west London, when I un-locked my bike & walked it to the crossing. I got on my bike to ride off, & I was nabbed & physically pushed off to the ground. I was 'technically' on the pavement, even tho' I argued I was on the kerb about to rejoin the road. But, no!! these Gestapo's wouldn't have it, so they fined me!

I've been to Amsterdam, & everyone rides on the pavement over there.. no bother at all.. What's wrong with the cops..?!!
