It hasn't been debunked at all. The only thing debunking it is the cops denying it and they are proven liars.

To me the most plausible explanation is that most likely he was sent out to instigate the looting to pull pressure off of the nearby police station which at dusk was just at the point of starting to become obviously overwhelmed. That was just about the time they were starting to intermittently run out of supplies like flash grenades and things.

It was most likely a desperate and failed tactic to get people distracted with free goodies - but cops aren't known for being real bright are they?

This Autozone was set on fire shortly after this guy broke out the windows.
