Anonymous Coward User ID: 78445863 United States 05/29/2020 01:27 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | ... Quoting: GA Girl The officer was put in a spot. He had no authority to search the house, so he has a parent against parent for whose word he should take. He has to assume the parent who made the call knows what a gun looks like (many toy guns look like real ones, and that would be even more so if you saw them on-line in the background rather than in person). He opted to err on the side of safety. If there had been a real unsecured gun & a child hurt/killed with it, he would be at fault for not doing something and could be fired or sued. As for the Zoom meetings, I am going to give policies and procedures, laws which will explain why this happened. I am NOT advocating calling police because someone had a toy gun. However, if you are a parent and we go into home schooling again in August, you need to know these things. Zoom school meetings are essentially school functions since hosted by the school. One would have hoped that the school had sent out a warning to parents early on that things like weapons (toy or real), alcohol, drugs, sex toys should not be in view and how the camera should be facing an empty wall and preferably in a quiet area of the house. Lots of people have gotten into trouble or been embarrassed during Zoom meetings (somebody walking behind them naked/in underwear, yelling obscenities, drinking, smoking a bong, etc.) Most parents should be smart enough to figure that out on their own, though. The problem is that many states have mandated reporting laws which require individuals who work around kids to make an immediate report if they see ANYTHING which could be considered dangerous or harmful to a child. The teacher falls into that position and so do many parents, too, with PTO, Scouts, school volunteering, and they have to sign papers and take training before being allowed to work with the kids. So if one of those individuals saw an unsecure gun near a young child (yes, many toys look real), then the chances of being reported are pretty great. In addition, if you have a special needs child, teachers are NOT allowed to hold a meeting with just SPED kids. That is against privacy laws. You can have SPED kids in the meeting, but there have to be regular education students in the meeting as well so as not to point out who has learning issues. Fuck off karen. My parents had unsecure and loaded guns in every room of the house i grew up in. Why? Because after the 68 riots they knew what could happen. Guess what? Im fine. Why? Because back then retards died and people accepted it. And like most people, Im not a retard. You are not reading my post correctly. I am merely stating facts as to why the police were called so that other parents wouldn't fall victim to this type of thing. I made no statement of agreeing with the police being called. So, why don't you take your 2nd grade reading comprehension elsewhere? You reek of justification. I personally think it was a totally stupid thing to call the police. But, when you are on Zoom meetings for a school purpose, and the school is leading that meeting, you have got to think of things you might have which would set off the "Karens and Kens" of the world. School business, by law = no guns or other weapons, no alcohol, no smoking, no guns, no visual sexual acts... I know it seems ridiculous in your own home, but people are better off taking a few precautions when setting up their child's work/Zoom space than having to defend themselves later to the police and the rest of the community. Those rules also apply when students are at school-sponsored activities (field trips, band trips, sports tournaments) and are staying in hotels, too. In other words, I am explaining, not justifying. Get it yet? |

Illuminate the area with decent lighting and all that should show on camera is the individual using the computer and the blank white wall. Anything else is just stupid. If you don't intend it to be on camera, move it behind the computer, not in front of it. When you're done with the meeting, shut off the computer or at least unplug the ethernet cable. Don't use wifi - it's insecure and has lower bandwidth. Never use android devices or I-whatever. They're just spy tools. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 78445863 United States 05/29/2020 01:49 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Also, thr school does not host zoom. Zoom hosts the school. A chines communist platform. So fuck off with all that. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77497363 School rules still apply if it is school business even if the platform is owned by Zoom. If your kid goes to perform with the school band at the Rose Bowl Parade, and they stay at a hotel and the kid has illegal/inappropriate contraband or gets caught having sex, he is still in trouble (even though the school doesn't own the hotel) because he is on school business. That is normally clearly written in the handbook, and believe me, schools write their handbooks so that THEY can decide what is appropriate or not. Parents need to be aware of the wording in handbooks and what is going on at their home during Zoom meetings! This kind of thing is actually a whole lot more common than you might think. |

This will have a two-fold result. It will help parents and students be more aware of who they need to avoid. It will have the other Karens come out in support so you can tag them as hazards as well, all in one go.
