PC Builders - Some questions
Do you Ryzen? How many cores did you go with, and do you feel that crazy amount of cores (anything above 8, I'd say) make any kind of difference with anything?

I'm looking to build and go with Ryzen, but not sure how many cores to pack. I use Photoshop and I know that *shouldn't* call for a whole lot, but Images are getting pretty big in megapixels and PS's code is getting bloated and buggy.

I currently have an AMD FX with Six Cores. It's been more than enough for a very long time now. Would going with an 8 core Ryzen get me current with a nice healthy feeling of "hey, this is faster!" or is the increase kind of deceptive?

Thanks

I used to do AND, might go back to them. Their new lineup looks worthy against Intel's lineup. Only issue, Intel tends to be more compatible. But AMD seems like they caught up honestly. You can't go wrong with either.

Re: PC Builders - Some questions
If you're looking for instant and obvious "Ooh that's fast" feelings, then you should swap to Intel with their 10th gen i9

While they're lagging behind in their fabrication process, they're able to do things that AMD hasn't been able to do and never will be able to due their proprietary instruction sets in their chips.

Intel will always perform better on Windows.

Why don't you grab some cheap GPUs (video cards) and render 100x faster than a cpu?

It's what they were built for.

Right answer. If you're worried about graphical performance, the GPU is your bottleneck.

Just make sure your video card is supported by THE VIDEO EDITOR YOU ARE USING else you will be using CPU for editing.

stay away from faulty products there are loads of them in pc market that fail within 3 years. notably asrock motherboards, acer monitors, samsung ram, seasonic psu. read reviews of equipment thats been on market a few years. Dont buy anything thats on sale or underpriced its usually shit.

I stopped building pc's because i couldn't stand all the equipment failure.

Re: PC Builders - Some questions
I started building in '98.

Have been happy with Lynnfield rig put together over a decade ago, until having to upgrade the RAM.

More, faster cores won't solve problems with bloated software.

How much RAM do you run? I went from 4 to 20GB, and since then I never max out CPU potential unless I'm doing MP4 encoding and decoding simultaneously.

I'm not rendering, I'm out of the 3d graphics game.

I do record music though, and for some reason the same plugins on the same software 14 years ago run slower now on computers 800x faster. ASIO still has latency. Ug.

I must be a rare exception: My ASROCK motherboards have lasted forever and have kicked quite a bit of ass. (I've gone through 2)

Re: PC Builders - Some questions
I've been using pentium/Intel cpus since the 90s. This year was the first time I switched to the Ryzen 9 3900 bc Intel was to slow with releasing their newer chips. I mostly just do gaming but I have had no problems with this new Ryzen and i haven't even tried overclocking it yet. Every game I've played so far plays fine and im still using and older evga 1080 card. Im waiting on the new 3000 series cards and then I will buy one of those and my pc will be completed. Back in the 90s, my brother in law liked AMD processors but they would always give him problems so that turned me off of AMD until now, but they are way better than what they use to be thats for sure.

I've never had an Intel. I built my first computer...must've been 98 or so, and was in on AMD from the ground floor.

As far as I can recall, any problems I had with my computers back then was due to Windows (I guess, though that Windows/AMD compatibility may have caused that)

Going from those amd fx cpu's to the latest gen is a huge leap forward!

But what cpu depends on what you plan to do (so photoshop is it profesional?) and your budget for this part/build.

The only way to be sure would be to check PS's usage of the swap file on the hard drive at the height of task usage.

If PS is having to exit the north bridge and use HDD swap space, then your amount of RAM is not enough, and the latency of data read-write through the south bridge would definitely be a bottle-neck that would not be improved with a north bridge upgrade.

The "XT" versions of the current Ryzen lineup are about to be released.

The Ryzen 3600xt paired with at least 3600 mhz cl14 mem on a b450 mobo (tomahawk maybe) would be a killer setup.

Also pair this up with maybe a 2070 super.

The problem is...Ryzen 3 is about to be released and RTX 3000 series gpu's are about to hit market.

You can still utilize a GPU to good effect.

[link to www.punchtechnology.co.uk (secure)]

GPUs have the memory and more importantly the pipeline between the processor and memory that makes image editing a lot quicker.

[link to www.researchgate.net (secure)]

Old chart, but you get the idea. A brand new top of the line pc can't even come close to an entry level graphics card on the same chores.

If you want to get a new cpu, fine. More power to you.

But if you want to get the job done faster, look to utilizing GPUs for the task. Their processing power is very useful and you can hang four or more off a board if you want to get serious.
