its steam being vented at some University, the sports area section of the campus...
the little video i saw yesterday even showed the steam being let out when the sound happened.
someone was filming it from inside their car.

Unless this is the first time in that University's history that they vented steam. If it's not the first time they've vented steam, people would have heard it before. Something that happens regularly, people know what it is. Like a train passing by rumbling along the track, run of the mill.

People not knowing what it was means that it doesn't happen regularly. It's like if Beyonce rode a dinosaur through Times Square. People would notice.
