If a cop stopped you and gave you a ticket for anything ,then he helped you

What kind of mistake would you still be doing

Every day that you have slept peacefully in your bed at night a cop has helped you. Don't be an ungrateful idiot!

A cop isn't your friend, or mine. They're Government agents serving an occupational agenda, and it's that agenda which they fulfill.

Wishful thinking.

Look at places all around the world with no active police services. They are total shit holes with high crime rates, high murder/rape rates.

Imagine calling a cop a "hero" because he spends his days standing on the side of the road on his phone while "directing traffic" during road work? Or because they sit around in parking lots all night making sure kids aren't rolling doobies and fucking in the backseats of their cars? Or pulling you over because you were going 40mph in a 35 and wanting to search your car in the process?

A cop may solve your murder, but the likelihood that they'll prevent it is about 1%.

I am not saying we dont need the police, but at this point it needs a dramatic overhaul. Torn down and rebuilt.

At this point, its 50/50. It's so corrupt, it's so bad, it's so dysfunctional, that it's 50/50 whether its worth it to have them around or not;

They are worse than public fucking school system. But no one is saying we dont need schools.....

Re: I've never had a cop help me in my life, and now I'm expected to thank one?
One cop was super helpful for me

when I was a teenager I had a pretty sweet vintage Les Paul

cops stopped me and said there was reports of a man carrying a guitar case selling drugs out of it.

took my guitar because they couldn't determine if it had drugs in it.

told me that I could retrieve my guitar back when they concluded it did not contain nor ever contained drugs.

I went to the station countless times and was treated like I was stupid

I was finally told that a guitar was never taken into evidence and that I was a trouble maker.

the cop was very helpful for relieving me of a $1300 guitar.

so helpful

tl;dr = cop used his badge to steal my Les Paul

Yes there is a balance.

A total police state is not the answer as its only a dictatorship in disguise.

A police-less state is also not the answer as it breeds total lawlessness.

The balance is fair and just laws that dont overstep the lives and freedoms of the citizens, but also protects them against those who wish to do harm to others.

Re: I've never had a cop help me in my life, and now I'm expected to thank one?
My father retired from the PA State police. He served back in the day when cops still carried a .38/.357 on their hip. He was a WWII veteran, wounded in combat, who had served in Patton's Third Army in France. He was a tough as they came. But in all his years of service, he only had to use his service weapon once. Talking to him after he retired, he remarked that he noticed society change for the worse beginning in the 60's (he always used JFK's assassination as the demarcation line). He said that any bad behavior by cops today is simply a reflection of society in general, not anything unique to the Police. I thought it was wisdom then and still find it to be true.

Re: I've never had a cop help me in my life, and now I'm expected to thank one?
For what specific reason should I do that?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78379424

When I was a kid in Texas in the early 70s the police ran a training session for kids called “safety town”. They had a town set up in a mall parking lot and then they taught kids how to safely ride their bikes through the streets. One of the policeman was a motorcycle officer. This was in Arlington, Tx. The officers name was “Hooper” and at that time Arlington was still a small city. People knew each other. Whenever we’d see Hooper he’d wave or pull up next to the car to talk to me.

That was the last time I really respected the police.

My dad was broadsided by a drunken teenage driver at 5am about 30 years ago. The kid ran a red light and was traveling 45 mph over the speed limit. My dad was on his way to the airport. Why was a 16 year old out at 5am? At any rate my family’s lives were destroyed. Especially my parents. My poor dad. The kid wasn’t even cited as the policeman said “He was a clean cut kid”. To me that’s doublespeak for “His dad showed up in a Jag and gave me $1000 to let the kid off”.

They didn’t call to notify us of his accident. Terrible head injury. I lived in the city it took place in but my mom didn’t. He could have died before she got there.

After I went to the hospital I went to the police HQ and caused the biggest scene you have ever seen. If it wasn’t for my girlfriend I would have been arrested for complaining to the police about a crooked and/or incompetent officer. The lobby filled with angry cops.

By the way his name is Officer Fudge of Miami PD. I bet he’s retired but regardless he’s a real pos.

Couple all of this with the harassment I received as a teenager in an expensive 98% white town (I’m white, surprise, they harass white kids too!) and I’m not fans, they used to follow me late at night when I was young. I knew they were the police bc they had their lights lit up (not flashing). I’d intentionally turn down as many culdesacs as I could just to have the cop follow me around a circle lol. In addition they circumvented the 2nd amendment here in my town. In order to apply for a CCP in my town I need the permission of 3 unrelated people in my county - that’s just to get the town police to forward the application to the state police. Fuck that. I don’t need to ask anyone’s permission for something granted to me in the constitution. Christ. A local advocacy group contacted my PD on my behalf and told them they were in violation of state law and the PD told them to fuck off. So unless I get the permission slips I can’t buy an assault rifle or handgun here. Shotguns and rifles yes. My property taxes are thru the roof yet the group told me not to make an issue as if I did the police would harass me.

So yeah the police fucking suck. I didn’t even mention the time the DEA followed me around for 3 days and then lied and called me at my office posing as the fire department and said my house was on fire and I needed to get home. I had pets and raced home, so fast I could have killed someone. I lost the DEA agents following me, which pissed them off. I got home and a sheriffs deputy was there in my driveway with flashing lights. They bullied their way into my house. All could have been cleared up with a phone call. I had several get out of jail free cards. Through my work I had become close friends with several FBI agents and they each gave me their cards and had written “get out of jail free” on the backs. Then I had a letter from the head of the DEA addressed to me personally saying they weren’t after people like me. I also knew one of timothy mcveighs defense attorneys and she made some calls on my behalf. For free. So the fucking jackbooted thugs screwed up, wasted a bunch of taxpayer money following me around when a simple phone call could have cleared it up. Scariest couple of weeks in my entire life.

But when people are burning the cities down, I want the cops to do their fucking jobs. These guys make bank these days. I don’t give a shit how scared they are of being the next cop who kills a black person. It’s why they get paid well. If they don’t want that risk find another profession. Turning tail on the mob is absurd as it only emboldens them.

So white I see both sides, this rioting needs to stop and if it takes force then so be it.

If you are keeping your nose clean, you won't need help or have run-ins from cops (unless some idjit decides to drive drunk and runs into you or breaks into your home), and you won't have issues with vigilantes.

Floyd: fentanyl and meth passing counterfeit bills
Arbery: trespassing multiple times

If they had kept their noses clean they would still be here.

I would be a fan of the cops if there were 1/10th the number of them and they all stayed at the station instead of driving around looking for trouble.

That said, we need to demilitarize them and rethink the police-state thing without violence.

I've never had a good interaction with them but I'll be damned if violence against them is the answer.

It's tough though, not everyone is as well armed as some of us are, but they should be... there would be no need for most of them if we could take care of our own towns and raise our children properly.
