Depends on the state. Texas you can use deadly force for property other states not so much.
Generally there must be an:

"Imminent threat of death or grievous(crippling) bodily harm." to legally apply lethal force. That applies in all 50 states.

The "castle doctrine" became lawin some states because some bleeding heart courts said:"If YOU left the situation(your living room)and escaped; you were no longer under "imminent threat"and had no legal reason to take the life of a miscreant.

Fortunately People with the balls to protect themselves and their loved ones were outraged. and we have the "castle Doctrine"Where you can be safe and defend yourself in your domicile. No need to "escape".

That's not to say you shouldn't do your utmost to avoid confrontation and applying lethal force.
