Early humans quickly found belonging to a clan or tribe greatly improved their ability to survive. The tribe's leaders developed it's ideologies and individuals believed and adhered to them ... or else.
Issues arise when another tribe is discovered two valleys over - A tribe that looks different, speaks different and has different ideologies. Sometimes the tribes got along, sometimes they didn't. Interbreeding usually happened though whether they got along or not.
