There was a lengthy post on this same topic last night. The thread discussed Mattis's political history and even aspects of his personal life.

Something about his non-standard social background of never getting married, never having children and, most importantly, close ties to left-leaning people or groups, were pieces of the puzzle in judging him.

For one, the guy ain't no rock-solid sociopolitical conservative. Instead, he has the whiff of being possibly a GLBT-oriented person of the left. Not necessarily a hard-left one, but sure as hell not a hard-right one.
