This direct threat to incumbent revenues is a major reason why ISP lobbyists have passed protectionist laws in more than 21 states trying to block your town's ability to even consider the option.

It's also why you'll often see the telecom sector and its various, obedient tendrils routinely try to claim these networks are a vile menace to free speech (they're not) or a guaranteed waste of taxpayer funds (again, not true at all).

I'm a free market capitalist. Let them all compete, and the consumer decide.

Our city run internet provider is expensive as hell. They charge $68 for 50 megabits and force bundle home phone which adds around $14 in fees.

That number goes up to $160/month plus fees for gigabit.

The origin of cable lay with the community. Recall the back of TVs had, in addition to the 75 ohm antenna connection a 300 ohm port labeled 'CATV'. They sold that right to the cable companies. Crap never ends.
