Need help! Gas line barbecue connection.
Doing some handyman work this afternoon for a client, she has a gasline hose from her barbecue going to a wall mounted gas connection.
I tried several times to insert the line tip into the connection, pulling back the retaining ring to clip the tip in, but it's not holding it in.
Any help /suggestions what the problem might be?

is the insert going all the way in? shine a flashlight inside the female end make sure there's nothing in there blocking the male end.

That is a quick disconnect fitting. The female end has 3 or 4 ball bearings that hold it together when insert the male end. One or multiple of those balls are failing. You need to replace the quick disconnect assembly. Most hardware stores carry those.

Just make sure you have the valve off when you remove the assembly.

Are you sure the position of the clip is correct when you insert the tip?

Are there any markings on the disconnect to show where the "handle" needs to be when you insert the tip?

Propane right? I have never seen that type of connection.

Looks like you have this:

[link to www.amazon.com (secure)]

You have a shut off on house. Remove female connector, issue most likely with female part.

take to home depot or plumbing supply and get replacement.

Yes, do this first. I assumed you had already checked for obstructions.

Here in Texas, dirt Dobbers love plugging stuff like that up.

Also, if the shut off handle and the quick disconnect is all one piece, you will have to shut off the gas supply to remove the fitting.

Replace the entire quick dissconect assembly. Easy and cheap. Don’t risk there being any leaks. Or better yet do away with that crap and use a threaded hose.

Yeah, the female end has the ring with the ball bearings, so that must be the problem, one of the bearings must be failing because the ring doesn't snap back to hold the male connector end.
Thanks for the info!

Quick fix: spray some lube like even WD40 inside fittings to loosen them up. Fittings get stiff after many years. Get it all the way inside the ‘foreskin’ part and shake it a bunch of times.

Okay, going there at 2:00 pm, will bring some wd40 and see if that will help, if not, I'll buy a new female connection.

THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP AND SUGGESTIONS!

Put some spit on the rubber seals or a shot of WD-40 and then pull back, insert, release.

The male connector has a bar running diagonally in the opening, never seen that before.

Good idea, probably significant differences that might be a but dangerous, in that propane is high pressure system, and natural gas is low pressure. I do know the orifices are different in the internals, like the difference using a water heater with either fuel. Wonder if there are any King of the Hill episodes had Hank addressing this. Laugh and learn.

Odd fitting. Must be a Canadian thing. I have never seen one like that.

Here, we just use flare fittings and flexible pipe for gas. Simple and reliable.
