This year has seen two comets making their way through the solar system, only to disintegrate as they approached the Sun. Comet ATLAS and Comet SWAN made headlines this year as astronomers spotted the bright space rocks making their way towards the Sun. Researchers had been hoping to analyse how the comets acted as they approached the Sun, and were hoping the comets would become visible to the naked eye. However, both comets began to crumble and break apart as they voyaged past the planets of the solar system. But the latest comet - Comet NEOWISE - looks a safe bet to make its way past Earth as it voyages through the solar system. more [link to www.express.co.uk (secure)] Ostria |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78585132 Cool theory! There are periods with very few or no comets entering our solar system and then they come in rows. This one, according to the wiki page in the first answer "This perihelion passage will increase the comets orbital period from about 4500 years to about 6800 years." Ostria |

How short is our journey here, just a blink of an eye at universe scale, we don't even have much historical information about life on Earth since last time the comet visited the solar system, when next time passes by, the Earth will be colonized by some alien invaders species that eats all of us. maybe the comet changes its mind and splashes in Atlantic, right in time for "Greenland" movie release. |

Did a little search, this was presented in Graham Phillips book "The end of Eden" In The End of Eden, Graham Phillips chronicles the sudden shifts in social demeanor and religious philosophy that swept the world in the wake of 12P/Pons-Brooks. He argues that there is no other explanation for these changes other than the presence of this massive comet in the skies above Earth. He contends that debris in the comet’s tail contaminated the atmosphere with a chemical known to cause aggressive behavior, and that after little more than a decade, worldwide hostility abruptly abated. He also explores how the appearance of a celestial body that outshone the moon would have been interpreted as a significant religious event--the premier appearance of a powerful new god to supplant the deities previously worshipped around the world.
