WE CREATED THAT. NOT YOU. So how is it all of the sudden "we can't farm" and "you can"?

Farming season going to sleep at night is a joke . no such thing . it's day and night for months on end or loose your ads . maintaining livestock in the winter is he'll on earth where I live . snow up to your ass and bitter cold . you can do without the livestock but eventually it will bite you because that security bumper ain't there when prices for your crops drop below production cost or a number of other things happen that cause crop failings . my first year I did not have time to spend a single day with my wife and kids for five month and my back never touched a mattress.

Black people have largely been expelled from the US agricultural landscape. In 1920, nearly a million Black farmers worked on 41.4 million acres of land, making up a seventh of farm owners. Today, only about 49,000 of them remain, making up just 1.4 percent of the nation’s farm owners, and tending a scant 4.7 million acres—a nearly 90 percent loss.

Might as well salt it and burn it now.

in all fairness the information is publicly available and easily learned and applied.

but do blacks actually want to be farmers?

no they want to be plantation owners.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76677781

In all fairness- just because you can read it or you tube it--- does NOT mean you can apply it!! Try milking a 1000lb cow who is not wanting to cooperate! try tube feeding a calf!!! gads I had a vet show me, practically hold my hand as I did it... and when I went home and had to do it solo..... gads!!!! I worried every damn time I was going to drown the poor thing! I couldn't do it on my goats and had to get creative to feed one! and I am sorry, watching Dr. Poe does not make pulling a calf easy peasy!!! ever have a 1000lb pissed off in pain momma come at you??? doubt it or you would NOT have made such a stupid reply! And I am sorry but, you can not learn HOW to Farm or Ranch just from watching a video or reading up on it.... You will get the basics.... and it is good for reference when you are unsure of something... but, it takes years to actually LEARN - through trial and error--- and a damn good old farmer, who spent his entire life farming and ranching!!! to guide you and hopefully encourage you... and even laugh at you !!!! I can watch a video on open heart surgery-- you gonna let me crack open your chest???
People who have NEVER farmed and think 'public' internet sources will give them all the tools to do are going to starve!! and BTW-- it takes a lot of monies to maintain a farm!!!
 Quoting: Shurrie

You're mixing "farming" with "husbandry". They're not the same thing and the work involved is completely different.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78951746

ok- you obviously know zip shit about 'farming!- so you think you can jut you tube how to fix a tractor? How about afford a brand spanking new combine? do you know how to survive if your crop fails because of blight? do you know which crops grow best in your area and why? and let me tell ya chief, after you watch a million videos on homesteading and small farming- get yourself a book called Five Acres and Independence, then come teach me how to grow lettuce, broccoli and spinach -- without chemicals to kill the grasshoppers... if you do not want chemicals then you need chickens, ginnies are best for bugs...Then you want major crops like Wheat, Sorghum, soybeans or perhaps corn? How do you want to plant them-- Amish style or modern? Amish is cheapest, but a hell of a lot harder then you think!! Modern, well we go back to the equipment needed... you got a lot of monies??? the old stuff breaks down and you need to know where to get the parts and/or rig it up!! New equipment is expensive and cost a lot to fix... Then there is storage of grains- will you do it onsite or at a grainery? what is the going price of the grain?? did you prepare your soil for the crop??? hell I can go on and on--- but you google your little heart out... and may I suggest you start small with your farm.. try you south facing window for herbs and a planter outside that is about 3 to 4 feet deep and 2 feet wide to grow 1 tomato plant (and if you want a variety of tomatoes, you will need to put some distance between the different tomato species..) Pay attention to the weather... do not water when the sun is fully out-- you may need to water twice a day... if you are able to successfully grow tomatoes- I suggest that you learn to properly can them and even try to sell them at a farmers market! Good luck my fellow future farmer
 Quoting: Shurrie

You don't need tractors or combines for farming. Plants naturally grow on their own. All you need is a little prep and set up and you can have bug free, easy vegetables. Again, plants NATURALLY GROW ON THEIR OWN. You don't have to do much at all but plant them and pick them.

Re: Young Blacks Want To "Reclaim" US Farmland.
Well, perhaps I shouldn't laugh about this, BUT......
Most people ,regardless of their ethnic identity, DO NOT know how to farm!! Hell most can not even grow a back yard garden or herbs in a window sill!!! It's even harder to grow food from seeds!!! How many of these 'city dwellers' can drive a stick shift?? How many understand the need and ability to read the weather to know when to plant or harvest?? Do they know the difference between a 'feed' crop and a 'food' crop? How many understand how to check their soil for PH or infestations ?? Do they know how to do canning or proper storage of foods and grains???
That's just the 'food' side of farming.....
Livestock!!!
I just lost my rooster and 3 hens due to a coyote! Do they know how to house, feed, water, protect and care for livestock??? Do they know how to properly butcher livestock? or even 'Cure' the meat??? Do they know how to ensure their meat is not tainted??
Also, herd to land control... very important!

Gads now let's talk about Equipment!
Earlier I mentioned being able to drive a stick... a lot of older equipment on farms are stick shift - also a lot still run on diesel... Do they know which piece of equipment does what on a farm??? How to maintain the equipment??

Then just basic home essential-- like well water maintenance, windmill or pump? Type of electric power to run the farm?? The MAJOR SEPTIC TANK!!!!

What about Critter Control--deer, Coyotes, raccoons, opossums, rat snakes, rats, mice, chicken hawks just to name a few critters

I mean, this is a just a small list of things -- and if they think that they will get farmer John to tend to it for them... they are beyond stupid! The farmer will die first before he/she allows someone else to take their land and they certainly won't be slaves to any ethnic race on their land!!!

In all fairness, learning something from the internet, a class, or a book is not the same as real world experience. I took an intensive 4 month long master gardener class a couple of years ago and the main takeaway for me was how much MORE there was to learn. To say that information about farming is 'easily learned and applied' is grossly understated, and any experienced farmer would laugh at the thought.
 Quoting: Windsage

I've farmed, gardened, and ranched my entire life. I've raised cattle, poultry, swine, goats, bees, and even worms. You learn new things constantly. Somethings from books, something from classes, somethings from Youtube, but more often than not, it's experience. You learn as you go.

If they think they are going to come out to God's country and "reclaim" my farm land, they could get more than they bargained for. All the farmers I know in this area are heavily armed, and well practiced at long range shooting. I saw one hit a goat at a full run with a clean head shot. I could do that if the goat was standing still, but a head shot at a full run is way beyond my skill level.

Canada has been giving free land to blacks since the American War of Independence. They have inter-married with whites and bred themselves out of existence for the most part.

In 1905, a large contingent of black people from the USA settled in Athabasca, Alberta. I met one of their great grandchildren once, and had to be told that she was black. Aside from the curly hair, she looked white to me.

John Ware, a freed slave and cowboy led one of the first cattle drives to Alberta, working for a farming syndicate. He claimed some land for himself and became the first private rancher in Alberta. None of his children had children of their own.

There was a soul food restaurant in Toronto called the Underground Railroad. It was owned by descendants of the Harriet Tubman immigration, but I have never met any others who can trace their ancestry back to there.

The oldest black settlement in Canada is in Pictou county, Nova Scotia. These are the descendants of 3,000 black loyalists, including some from George Washington's forced labour camp, who escaped to freedom during the War of Independence. Many of them found Canada too cold and resettled in Sierra Leone or the Caribbean. For those who stayed, prejudice and discrimination kept them insular and they are still a visible community to this day.

Race is skin deep, blood lines are more important.

Like these idiots have any clue how to farm. All they will do is destroy the farms and then demand something else.

Crush these vermin, once and for all.

ok- you obviously know zip shit about 'farming!- so you think you can jut you tube how to fix a tractor?

You don't need tractors or combines for farming. Plants naturally grow on their own. All you need is a little prep and set up and you can have bug free, easy vegetables. Again, plants NATURALLY GROW ON THEIR OWN. You don't have to do much at all but plant them and pick them.

That may work for your little garden in your backyard. Not in commercial farming. Idiot.

HAHAHAHAHAAAAAA -- would you PLEASE PLEASE go explain that to my damn cherry trees!!! I put them in the ground-- I watered them-- hell I even talked to them--- I provided them with bees and other pollenators-- I asked the bugs to please leave my little orchard --but sheets, they up and died on me after a freak freeze out... oh and my 'house hold' garden, the one we use for personal foods.... ya, I tilled the soil, I burned the stubble, I put in the seeds and some plants, I watered, I weeded, I talked to them and I begged the bugs, rabbits and moles to move along--- but damn!!! stuff refused to grow, except the damn weeds!! Critters refused to leave--- Plants do naturally grow and they also naturally die or get eaten by critters and pest! They also get diseased... I pray to god you do not have children... hell they naturally grow too. but you don't just pop one out of your vajayjay and let it tend to its self!! god now wonder the world is FUBAR'D!!!

Re: Young Blacks Want To "Reclaim" US Farmland.

 Quoting: Mr. Givins

OK so I read the article linked, and it doesn't explain why black land ownership went down, other than to say it was racist somehow, and linked to this article to explain. [link to www.theatlantic.com (secure)] That's enough to discredit it there, that it consigns the central argument to a one-line link to somewhere else.

But I looked at the linked article too, and it also (not surprisingly) doesn't give much of an argument as to why black land ownership decreased for racist reasons. Essentially it's just that black people weren't voting when the members of the FmHA that distributed land grants were appointed. Not even that the FmHA was racist.

And so that's it. Among pages and pages of whining and complaining, there's no there there. Nobody was being racist in denying blacks equal opportunities to get and keep land.

They must just have sucked as farmers or wanted to use the money for something else. And this article, with its big claims and utter lack of proof, is evidence.
