Getting up at 4 am to tend the animals, because you need extra income most of the time, so someone has to have a job off the farm... sooo up at 4AM no matter if there is a blizzard or a heat wave... even if you only have crops... there is the constant checking because of the weather.. It is summer here in Kansas, tomorrow is going to be 105 degrees and the rain just won't fall on our fields or pond!!! 2 miles N. is getting wet LOL... so up early to get animals fed, fruit trees watered, veggies watered and bee's checked... all by 9am .. otherwise too hot... now winter... oh geesh... checking on animals that are having their 'winter/spring' babies..stayed up all night with a goat having birthing issues and tracked down a cow who didn't come up, and she was in the middle of birthing and it was to late to save the calf..(damn those are hard on us emotionally).. ensuring there is plenty of hay and corn feed to keep them alive... not to mention watering them, checking to ensure the water is not froze.... checking the fields of winter wheat... did it get planted on time etc... We don't have to have a license but you best know what you are doing! Plenty of people have died falling off farm equipment! I love learning about how other countries do their farming... It always gives me a new appreciation for our farm.. Spinning on the Pause...Rewind |
