The woman's gun looked more like a flare gun to me, too.

Yes, that should be your "go-to" gun for normal standard home defense against a lone (or a pair) of intruders. But a mob? Go with the AK/AR's. If you shoot 5 rounds out of a shotgun and then go to reload, you might be quickly overwhelmed. When I'm confronted by a mob, my answer to them, with a shotgun and 8 shells will be fine, you may get me, but which 12 or so of you are coming with me?
