They don't know firearms. That little popgun would have become very useless in a very short while.
Wanna take on a crowd? Shotgun. Why do you think "scatter" guns and "street howitzers" were so popular in the old West?

When I'm confronted by a mob, my answer to them, with a shotgun and 8 shells will be fine, you may get me, but which 12 or so of you are coming with me? I am planning to get one of these
