Yup. Brand new Ross in our town was nearly empty after first shutdown. Also I noticed the one year old Hobby Lobby here has ALL their seasonal shit out, from every season. I was guessing they’re also going to close down. There go some jobs... that locals didn’t have for very long. And I forgot, our JCP is going out of business too. Before these stores came all there was were thrift stores. So back to square one... thrift stores + Walmart.

I'm not finding things at Walmart. I was looking for sheets, and their selection was dismal. Someone said that they had all been bought to make masks. I don't believe that. The supply lines have been upset or severed.

I don't go to the grocery store often - once every couple of weeks - but it's a big Meijer and they have not had any rubbing alcohol (at least when I'm there) since this bullshit started. I looked on Amazon and it's all price gouging/ridiculously high prices. Found some medical supply place online and it was still way more expensive than the grocery store and "call for availability". I use it, a lot, in cleaning stuff like fixtures, countertops, exterior of the toilets, etc, and to get it I'm gonna have drive all over town looking or order online at high price. I mean, WTF? Isn't it a common product, widely used all over the world? Must come from corn (? - not sure) but why in the hell isn't it available? I mean either massive amounts are being hoarded or production has been reduced.

Relying on China too much. Remember when great sheets used to be made in the US? It was called Fieldcrest and they had awesome stuff.

Clinton let them go by the wayside when China came into the WTO.

Nobody else could compete. And now we get crappy microfiber. All the nice designs and embroidery gone.

Americans have nobody but themselves to blame. I sure as heck didn't want to see China become the only supplier in the world.

What is wrong with people? Always making the worst choices. But if you said anything at the time, you were blasted as a loony.

Remember they said insourcing would more than makeup for the outsourcing going on? All lies to benefit Wall Street.

Ok, so the economy is shrinking real time but so is the population. In many University cities in California, squatters ate moving in to replace chinese and other foreign students who have left the country.

People are also dying in waves, the first of which was enormous but not reported. Check lexis crime maps historical data...it’s mind blowing how many deaths in the first few weeks of lockdown.

These shortages will even out but first, war.

I have been vacuuming up sale items from the stores the last month. It was all marked down like 60%; too good to resist. I’ve asked the greeters if the store is closing. They say they’re going to remain open. But many of them are empty compared to the way they were before. I have hope but definitely they’re all gone eventually. Um, not to be rude, but you didn't tell us any intel or anything, I mean it's obvious they're self-liquidating stores like TJ Maxx, Ross, etc, very obvious.

I mean if you've got some specific intel as to why they are expecting a short window, etc, please fill us in.

That's why I said in a few of my posts that the best thing to do right now is to buy things, everyday things you need, toaster, microwave, pots/pans, clothes, even buy double, because I see a lot of stuff disappearing.

They're not getting their shipments out of China, nothing to put on the shelves.

Simple logistics. Between Trump pissing them off and China's industrial shutdown, they are back logged for months on order I would imagine.

I for one couldn't care less. I have all I need, and If I ever do get hungry there is always cornfed longpig.

Most retailers are preparing to go out of business. They are self-liquidating because cost and they know they only have a narrow "re-open" window to do it.

And...

Because the big liquidator companies are overwhelmed and can't move the product to other retailers because there are no other retailers now.

They can't even load it and ship it to dump it in Africa or South America.

So this is why.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72337722

That's exactly what is happening at Ross. I was in one yesterday to buy some sheets and at least half the shelves were empty. All the shelves for sheets were empty.

So I went to another Ross. Same scene. With nothing even on the shelves to sell, how can they survive even another month?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79087889

There empty at hardware stores and grocery stores.
This is very sad times.

Shoot stright
 Quoting: Bush Master

It's not quite that dire. While I hardly every buy stuff or shop (other than the grocery store), my husband was in Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Wally World and Menards and he said all looked normal to him. Those retail dept stores, I wouldn't know because I hate shopping so have never been most of them.

It's scary, though, because there ARE shortages of some things and I'm worried someone is going to pull some plug somewhere and it will be back to the 18th century.

30 years ago my retail stores were getting hit by black shoplifting gangs. It's a million times worse now. Retail loss prevention is impossible. And now blacks (and others) are punching workers and shooting up malls. Even in upscale places.

Lots of things will change soon.

Live in popular Chicago Suburb. The Menards i always go to continue to empty their shelves and not replace. It is obvious throughout the store. They just move things closer together. Very little inventory and gets less each week. I was thinking shipment delays. Home Goods in popular area had half of the store sold out when I was there. I asked Check out cashier about inventory. She claimed trucks three times a week and they are just selling fast. ( that is not it. Inventory looks old ). Whole Foods and local Grocery have empty shelves and vacant freezers. One store is even clearing out Seafood and combing with other freezer area to make it look
like more. Something is up and it is weird. Costco even low on stock. I have noticed for months. No one seems to comment. So weird.

The President has GOT to start antibody testing individuals - anybody wants one can have one kind of thing. I know there are probably tens of millions who have antibodies. Give them green cards to pin on their clothing and let them go back to work, allow them not to mask up, and they don't have to social distance. The country is going to go belly up. Plus, it's not fair to make people who have already had it to wear masks and social distance - that's just preposterous.

This is very strong evidence the virus has mutated to a much less dangerous form. This is very common if not universal with every virus that comes along besides certain exception.

As an Amazon seller who buys shelf pulls and liquidations I do not see this occurring. We are seeing companies selling out around the coastal areas and large cities. Midwest stores are loaded with product. Amazon is giving us the best sales numbers in my sales group we've ever seen. I believe the pent up demand was real and people are buying like nuts.

I've noticed this as well. Wife needs a new car and we visited several dealerships over the weekend and none of them have any inventory. I'm talking literally NO new cars and none on the way anytime soon.

Then, I took a trip to Walmart through a small town about 10 miles from my home. I rarely go that way, but noticed almost all of the stores (local small mom/pop) were all closed down. Store names were taken off the buildings and it looked like a ghost town. Wierd I thought.

Then wife and I went to the Mall of Ga. and I noticed only about half the retailers were open and all of them were had limited inventory... everything seemed picked over. Several restaurants that were doing fine before covid were out of business.

So I'm starting to think the OP is right. The supply chain is drying up, but it's not being talked about because it would cause a panic.

I know someone at Hasbro. They're now getting almost a third of their orders directly to Walmart as store exclusives. Online shops are cutting orders. So is Target. They're taking massive hits from the BLM riots, on top of their existing financial problems. Walmart knows they're going to be the only brick and mortar retail store before this ends.

Normalize every aberrant behavior, bring common all deviancy and let fly the reins of morality and reason, then welcome in that utopia that liberals embrace called communism, that which most Americans with but a shard of ethic would immediately recognize as evil.

In all seriousness, if anyone has little ones that have their hearts set on a particular toy, doll, etc. between now and Christmas the time to start tracking it down is NOW.

You will not, in all likelihood, find it anywhere including online between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Just a heads up.

Sad to say I don't think children really play with dolls anymore. Or even toys. They all want iPhones and racy outfits so they can become top influencers or rap stars asap.

I stopped consuming stupid shit. If it doesn't have a useful application, it doesn't get bought. I haven't been in any of those stores you listed in decades!

I can do without!

I'm the same way but there are still ordinary things that wear out or others that need replacement parts.
In his poem Human Pride, Marx admits that his aim is not to improve the world, reform or revolutionize it, but simply to ruin it and enjoy it being ruined:

With disdain I will throw my gauntlet full in the face of the world,
And see the collapse of this pygmy giant whose fall will not stifle my ardor.
Then will I wander godlike and victorious through the ruins of the world
And, giving my words an active force, I will feel equal to the Creator.
