My grandfather was purchased from a Dublin orphanage by a German couple when he was ten. They brought him to the U.S, to work. His life was actually upgraded.

He worked hard, became successful. We don't even know what his real (Irish) last name was. He suffered a lifetime of digestive issues which he always attributed to eating only gruel as a child.

Life was cheap then...
