I agree with you Helenus. Several large caldera lakes in eastern Africa have wells in the center with pipes driven into them that rise above the water surface levels to let carbon dioxide and methane to slowly drain out.

It is because of Anthrax in the water.

Other watering holes in Africa also has them same problem.

I remember watching a documentary about African rhinos drinking from one water source that had anthrax in it and they would die from it and then the hyenas would come in and eat the dead Rhinos and then succumb to the anthrax themselves.

Wow upon further review, these elephants died around small water holes. I am stumped and beyond sad, these are mammals that rival or exceed whales and the great apes in intelligence and they are quickly fading away off the face of the earth.

It will most likely be anthrax or poisoning either by accident or on purpose. In recent years there have been local people who have poisoned herds of elephants due to them wiping out their crops and trampling villagers. This die-off is similar to the last one in Botswana that was over 100 head. Supposedly the tests of the carcasses did not show anthrax.

Botswana is grossly over populated when it comes to elephants and they are destroying the natural woodlands and wiping out the food that all of the plains game species need to survive. The country probably has about 50,000 more elephants than the environment can support. Sad but true. Endangered is only relevant to the specific area you are talking about and there are still lots of elephants in southern Africa. Too many. Kruger National Park in South Africa is another place that has way more elephants than the area can support and they are destroying the park.

I'm pretty sure it is probably some mine up stream dumping arsenic etc into the river....

This particular outbreak had started with, and was still mostly infecting, hippos. The common hippopotamus, a species I love dearly and had studied in Ruaha many years back, is highly susceptible to anthrax for a number of reasons. First, hippopotamuses come into contact with spores when out munching grass at night. Second, they aggregate, especially as waterholes shrink during the dry season. The terrible effect was obvious as blood gushed from the eyes and mouth of one dead hippo slowly filling the pond—still occupied with its live compatriots—with anthrax spores.

Others are obviously dying more slowly, like the ones that are wandering around. So it’s very difficult to say what this toxin is,” said McCann.

Elephants of all ages and both sexes have been dying, local reports found. Several live elephants appeared weak and emaciated, suggesting more will die in the coming weeks. The true number of deaths is likely to be even higher because carcasses can be difficult to spot, say conservationists.

Botswana lifts ban on elephant hunting
After five years, hunting will now be allowed in Botswana, home to about a third of Africa’s savanna elephants.

n June 2018, the government of Botswana put together a committee to advise on whether the trophy hunting ban should be lifted. Implemented in 2014 under then-President Ian Khama, the goal was to better conserve species like elephants. “There was little accountability from the community trusts” managing hunting at the time, said Elephants without Borders director Mike Chase, in an interview with National Geographic this February, when the proposal was being debated. “The villagers didn’t benefit from the hunting quota and the fees that the hunters were paying.”



Nonetheless, the committee—which included local authorities, NGOs, researchers, industry representatives, and others—found that “there is a negative impact of the hunting suspension on livelihoods, particularly for community-based organizations” that were previously benefiting from hunting.

It also found that the Department of Wildlife and National Parks was taking too long to intervene and control destructive elephants, which can destroy a season’s worth of crops in a single night.
